Any tips for doing my first Wiccan ritual?

I've been studying Wicca/Paganism for a few years now and tonight I'm finally doing my first ritual. So does any experienced Wiccan have any tips/warnings/etc?

Update:

If you are Christian PLEASE stay out of this.

Update 2:

Since some people won't listen I'm going to repeat myself. If you are Christian STAY OUT of this. You don't know anything about Wicca so don't tell me it's wrong. Don't tell me to talk to jesus Christ, don't tell me about god, because you aren't going to change me. So if you are Christian don't bother. Blessed be. )o(

I'm not a Wiccan specifically, but as a Pagan, I would suggest something simple.

Why has this path attracted you? What kind of magical energies do you want to bring into your life? If you plan on using your path to heal others or yourself, you might as well start with something like that to set the intent of your journey on this path.

If you plan on using your path to try to find your place in the universe, you might call the four elements, enjoying your time out in nature. Maybe light a candle.

There's usually very little to worry about, unless you go out of your way to insult a spirit who comes when you call it, or show disrespect to the land and the spirits in it.

Also, to you who are ignoring the fact that they asked for you to stay out of it...SHAME on you. Even in the Bible, Jesus left people alone who didn't want to be bothered, except for people turning the temple into a market place. If you claim to be Christian, actually follow the words of Christ, and love people around you enough to respect their wishes to not be "ministered" or "preached" at.

If you think a ritual might need a "warning," you're clearly not ready. You should both understand and be comfortable with what you're doing.

Second, how can we give you tips if you don't even tell us what kind of ritual it is? Every ritual has a specific purpose. There is no generic ritual.

Third, haters gonna hate. Asking them to go away accomplishes nothing. If anything, it encourages them. Just ignore them. They aren't worth your time. Consider how much time these guys must waste every day jumping into random posts to tell us to pray to Jesus, as if strange on the Internet is going to inspire a miraculous conversion. Sad, really. ;)

The best advice I can give you is to remember that it's what in your heart that matters, not in the specific ritual trappings. If you flub a word or something, don't sweat it.

Also, remember that the various ritual elements exist for one purpose only, and that is to focus your mind. Candles don't have to be a specific color, necessarily, nor does an invoking pentagram differ much from a banishing pentagram. It's not the movements of your athame that make the ritual, it is the sincerity in your heart.

Your ritual, presumably, is intended to introduce yourself to your gods, and to do them honor. Keep the goals in mind, and let the chips fall where they may. Too many new Wiccans get tied up with regards to trying to get every little detail right, and in the process squeeze out the capacity for serendipity.

She moves in mysterious ways, and diverse and wondrous are His ways.

I don't know what you have planned. There are all kinds of rituals, from short & sweet (lighting a candle and saying a prayer) to giant, elaborate productions.

So I can't really offer tips. I guess I would say do what is meaningful to you, and since it's your first keep it simple.

I guess the idea you think there might be something to warn you about gives me pause... what do you think happens when we worship our Gods that you think might require a warning?

Cleanse yourself first. Make sure your mind is clear. Make sure you have time when you will not be disturbed. And I suggest reading the ritual lines a few times or write them down so you can say them fluently without pause.

WitnessofJesus, I don't think that was a ritual tip. It's like if someone asked for a cookie recipe and you started showing them how to make pizza. It's rude and unhelpful.

perhaps your first wiccan ritual should be praying to God and accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior. Then forget about all that wicca stuff and study your bible. Good luck.
