2000 cavalier jumps timing?

I have a 2000 z24 cavalier with the 2.4. My friend was changing the valve cover gasket and saw that the timing was 180 degrees off timing so he tried to fix it. He followed the directions and did everything by the book and when he put it all back together it drove great until he hit about 40-45 mph when it made noise and he parked it. when he pulled it back apart the timing haf jumped again.

He checked the teeth on the gears, none missing. The chain is not loose. What could cause this? It drove before he fixed the timing it just had no power and now it won't even drive much, any ideas?

And one more thing: if we proceed to try and fix this can there be any consequences that we should know about? I read somewhere that fixing the timing could cause the car to stop running all together, that doesn't make sense to me.

THANK YOU!!!! And if you're not sure well than thanks anyway for atleast reading my question.

Here is the deal. The engine is designed to run one rotation on the intake to receive fuel and another rotation for the exhaust stroke. If your timing is set up correctly then every other rotation of the engine will show the timing marks 180 degrees off. On the next rotation they line up again. There may have been a mistake made when re-adjusting the chain and that would most of the time cause the car not to run at all. Now that your timing has been messed with it may still be off a good bit. It is not likely the thing would jump out of time that quickly and still run at all. Worst case senario when the timing is way off is to bend valves and that is bad.

A car won't start with the timing off 180°. Your friend doesn't understand that the timing marks move as the motor rotates and they don't line up every rotation. If the motor ran before he screwed around with it you now have bent valves and need to remove the cylinder head and get the valves done at a machine shop. I'd keep the idiot away from my car if I were you!!!

with 180 degrees off he would not get started ! he better start pulling the timing chain and check it out ! the chain could be stretched so far it won,t stay in time or some of the teeth on the cam and crank gear chewed up ! another thing he needs to do is pull the distributor and check the gear on the end of the shaft, it could be chewed up !

Plain and simple if your timing was 180 off The car would not run your valves would hit the pistons and your engine would have been destroyed. there was a very good chance there was nothing wrong with your timeing to begin with. there's a very good chance he messed up the timing buy a tooth or two
