Why would god kill the land and "air"animals of the world with the flood?

but not kill the fish or sea mammals? Sounds like a major inconsistency in God's logic. Anyone care to explain this?

Update:

@ Joe and people like him. I thought it was obvious, perhaps not, my question is why did he kill all the air and land animals with the exception of the animals brought on the SS Ark, but not kill fish and sea mammals?

Update 2:

@ Bird

You write "Because God wasn't trying to punish the animals." So why did god kill all the animals with the exception of the animals on Noah's ark? After all, he is the greatest god ever and could do anything he wants. If he did not want to punish the animals, why not save them?

Yes. It certainly is an inconsistency. The trick, if there is one, is that nobody cares. The audience knows it's just a myth, so they don't care about what we would call the historicity of the tale.

Myths are generally full of such inconsistencies, because they aren't historical, the audience knows they aren't historical, so none of that matters; only the lesson matters.

I've been in discussions about this myth many times over the years. What I have observed (see if you haven't had the same experience) is that even though it's plain that the flood kills land animals, everyone just assumes it means all animals, and nobody has ever asked the question this post asks.

I noticed it, and I figured that there are saltwater fish and fresh water fish. If the flood was primarily saline (this is God, after all) then the fresh water fish would die. If the flood was fresh water, all the salt water fish would die.

The disturbance of the sea level would wipe out lots of species that live in a given depth. Their ecology would be devastated and they would all be killed.

We could, of course, choose to obsess about this, but the real point is, nobody cares. The flood was a major disaster (okay, you can say it: "Of Biblical proportions!!") that wiped out all humans, and that's all that matters in the story. Historicity is unimportant to the story.

He didn't. Remember the boat? He saved the animals and mankind on a giant boat.

It does not say in the Bible. It doesn't make any difference what-so-ever. If you would like to write a book and put more details into it, go for it. Keep all the details in the Bible, and fill in all the blanks. It would be interesting. But does knowing why sea mammals weren't killed change anything at all?

I should think the answer is obvious. He was killing the humans by flood and the sea creature can live in water. There is no need to save them. But maybe its not the case. Maybe you can come up with something more interesting.

People worshiped animals like they were G-ds, secondly it was convenient to wipe out everything else that had no place after the flood, only animals that G-d chose to survive were the ones that did survive.

FYI - When the temple stood there were spiritual diseases that hanged on walls, people etc. Such a disease was Tzarat, when a persons home caught the disease the house would have to be raized to the ground, if that persons neighbour shared a comman wall, their house was also to be raized to the ground, that's why our sages kept repeated "woe to the wicked and its neighbours".

When G-d cursed Adam in the garden of eden, G-d said "The earth shall be cursed because of you", also we have dominion over the animals and they become our possessions and tools for human development. Therefore when man had to die, so did their animals. G-d does not approve of looters, so he recreated the world to his fashion by boiling it.

In the Torah, when ships were sunken by G-d as retribution, no one was able to gather its riches until a period of time when that generation had died out, on other occasions such as Canaan, Israel got to claim it because G-d gave Canaan to us Jews as our Covenant with G-d.

It was because of the merit of Noah, that the world was allowed to continually exist, therefore only animals that G-d had reserved for Noah and the Next world you might say, was allowed.

god saved a small percentage of all the animals to repopulate the earth

he did not need all the animals

the fish did not interact with humans only the animals that had lungs to breath air needed to be saved

there is no inconsistency in God's logic

your reasoning is the problem not god's logic

Why does he need a flood at all? Can't he just snap his fingers and voila, everyone on earth is dead.

He didn't. Only the area where the black sea is now flooded.
