How to identify the type of processor I have.?

My motherboard short-circuited and I wanted to only remove the parts that were absolutely necessary.

I want to only buy a new motherboard and transfer everything else including my CPU. I have a core i3 processor and I want to keep it. I have read online that i need to buy a motherboard that matches the processor (same sockets). I have very little technical knowledge on these so I want very detailed instructions on how to check the processor type.

NOTE: I can't turn on my computer so software wont help

I have intel CPU.

well it will either be LGA1155(Ivy-bridge/Sandy-bridge), LGA2011(Sandy-bridge-E), or LGA1150(Haswel). How old is it... if it is fairly new then it is most likely LGA1150, if it is older than it is probably LGA1155, or if it is a performance system or server then it is most likely LGA2011. The easiest way to tell would be to remove the heatsink and see what model number it says on the CPU itself then do a search, or it might say on the motherboard by the CPU.

If you haven't modified the computer from when you bought it. You should be able to go to the Computer's brand website and enter your model # and it will tell you the info needed.
