Hi,
LCD TV's come in two forms.
CCFL LCD - Which use cold cathode bulbs to back light the screen.
and
LED LCD - Which use small led's either around the sides (Edge-lit), or in an array (backlit).
The LED lit screens have taken over where the CCFL lights left off. Picture wise there isn't going to be a lot of difference, but the LED lit screens offer lower power consumption and because they are often even slimmer, much better looking when on a TV wall mount.
Manufacturer matters a lot more in my opinion. Panasonic and LG are good, Samsung is good, as long as you choose one with a "game mode". A lot of Samsung's don't have this, so you end up having a small delay between pressing controller buttons and getting a reaction on the screen.
Also, don't choose a larger screensize over quality if you are on a limited budget. I'd be far happier with a good quality 32" screen with all the bells/whistles rather than a cheap 40"+ screen from an unknown manufacturer for the same price.

LED is a LCD technology with an LED backlight (as opposed to fluorescent). There are a couple of advantages with LED. LED lasts longer and is more energy efficient. Probably the biggest advantage that people will notice is that LED stays bright over the life of the TV. The problem with non-LED TVs is that after a couple of years, the TV can no longer reach its full brightness.

LED is the same as LCD, but with LED backlighting. It is a technological improvement.
It is like, which is better Iphone 4 or Iphone 2?
Obviously the newer one...
Good luck finding LCD that doesn't have LED backlighting.
