Climate Change... Man-made?

So let's get this out of the way.. I'm a dumb person who will believe many well constructed arguments. This makes me prone to conspiracy theories. I'm still a senior in high school and have a love for science (AP Chem/AP Bio)

All my life, I've believed that humans are changing the environment - weather, acid rain, etc. etc. However, I know that the Earth's climate has ALWAYS been changing, I just assumed that the rate of increase in temperature has increased in the past century.

Recently, many people whose opinions I respect have begun denouncing climate change as man-made.

What's some evidence/your own opinion that supports either side? I'm just really confused haha.

10pts to best answer

Update:

is Joe Smith's answer the accepted theory in the scientific community, or is his answer more of a conspiracy theory (just wondering, not going to affect my choice of best answer)

Climate change science is shoddy, it was known for a long time that the warming effect of CO2 logarithmically diminishes with concentration, and that levels of more than 150ppm have very little effect on climate (I can bet you were never told that)

But the real clincher is that CO2 is accelerating in it's rise, but global temperatures are not, there is zero correlation between CO2 and global temperatures, and if my belief is correct and it is solar activity that caused the warming then we are at a peak in temperatures and it's going to get cooler.

If you have a love of science then the best thing you can do is find some data and look at it. Then make your own mind up. Go right to the source, if possible, or an unadulterated copy if not.

Unfortunately, some of that data is still not without problems. Some has been "adjusted". Strangely, the adjustments all tend to exaggerate the warming trend.

People may quote "extreme weather". Find out how extreme the weather was in the past. Most people don't know so are easily fooled. Same with temperatures: some people will always choose a date between 1750 to 1950 to start any temperature graph. What happened before and after those dates?

Here are some to be going on with:

Climate change has been going on for millions of years. The disaster promoters were claiming Global Cooling just a few years ago and now its Global Warming. They once called it Climate Change and it got so embarrassing so they started calling it Global Warming. This farce is promoted by people like Al Gore who has made a FORTUNE from it.

Climate Change is indeed man made. You will get morons here who tell you there has been no warming for 15 years The flaw with that is the 17 warmest years since record keeping began were all within the last 18 years They will say GW has paused...another lie

Skeptics/deniers are no better than con men They present links that have no real bearing on AGW

AGW is a reality and no matter how they say it isn't doesn't change the truth of it

The science is slip-shod. The models fail miserably. The current cooling trend is taking them completely by surprise. Their manipulation of the data is criminal. It was warmer 15 years ago, 80 years ago, 800 years ago, and 2000 years ago. Ice caps are currently growing and global sea ice is nearing a record high. The rate of sea level change is unchanged from what it has done for 300 years.

These facts can all be verified without too much work. Be sure to factor in the "adjustments" to the past temperature records.

The best answer is that the climate is very complex with various factors and their interactions. It is not well understood and since it is very large and experiments would be dangerous no experiments are possible.

That said of course mans activities have impacts on the climate, we just are not able to determine their individual impacts nor the natural factors that also impact our global climate.

The fact that climate models continually fail and then some modifications are made is all the evidence you need to understand that nobody really knows.

It depends whether you are interested in the many decades long and massively confirmed findings of science or the debunked deceptions of the fossil fuel industry.

    Re the science:

U.S. National Academy of Sciences, 2010:

    http://books.nap.edu/openbook.php?record_id=12782&...

“Climate change is occurring, is caused largely by human activities, and poses significant risks for a broad range of human and natural systems.”

“Choices made now about carbon dioxide emissions reductions will affect climate change impacts experienced not just over the next few decades but also in coming centuries and millennia…Because CO2 in the atmosphere is long lived, it can effectively lock the Earth and future generations into a range of impacts, some of which could become very severe.”

“The Academy membership is composed of approximately 2,100 members and 380 foreign associates, of whom nearly 200 have won Nobel Prizes. Members and foreign associates of the Academy are elected in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research; election to the Academy is considered one of the highest honors that can be accorded a scientist or engineer.”

You are correct. The Earth's climate changes all the time. That in no way excludes it from being immune to human influence.

Look at the people denying human influence in climate change. They are nearly all driven by a business or religious agenda and their arguments are not grounded in accepted science but rather in ideology, sometimes wrapped in just enough science to fool the layperson.

The pop culture media has done a good job at making people think conspiracy theories are for nut-jobs and should be ignored. But in reality if we close our minds to different views then all that's left is the view of who-ever is currently in power. And those in power would love for you to believe them and discount all others wouldn't they.

Not by any significant amount. By 0.1 C at the most since the industrial revolution.
