Is this inappropriate in a workplace?

New director of the company I work for is very PRO Jesus. To the point she wrote in a memo "remember: Jesus is the reason for the season" she also has crosses hanging in her office, and she also pointed then out to me stating that she wanted to redecorate the room but didn't want anything too drastic until she found the perfect artwork. she said"I obviously am going to have these up." ? I'm Catholic and even I was intimidated by how much religion she is putting into her new role.Is this wrong? I feel like this has some kind of issue and I can't put my finger on the definition of what this is.....

Update:

Also for the reason I am asking about it.... It makes me feel weird in her office. Also she sells Avon and has the books all over the clinic. I definitely know that is a violation. She is the clinic director...I don't know if it is OK because it just feels weird...!!That is why I was asking...

You know that's s "violation?" Of what?

I would say it's inappropriate, but it's not illegal.

It doesn't matter that her position is above yours or that she is the clinic director. If she is in violation by having Avon booklets lying around, you should report her up the chain - to whoever she works for. Don't feel bad about it. She should feel bad trying to ram her religion down your throat. Religion does not belong in the workplace and it doesn't belong in business, except for a few Christmas decorations at Christmas time. I tend to think that since she is new, her superiors have no idea what she is doing. If you are going to complain, it should be right away, not a year or two down the road.

They are at a disadvantage in some sense, due to religious freedoms, but the side-selling may be more of a problem. I would point that out to the employer and clinic owner, and let them observe the rest. They would need to be very careful about acting upon the religious activity, because it is protected unless it actually can be shown to interfere with her doing her job. You also don't want them to translate your report into the short form that you don't care for her religion.

You can read up on the religious freedoms and liability of the employer here:

    http://www.eeoc.gov/policy/docs/qanda_religion.htm...

Just let the employer know about the catalogs and side job - the rest may take care of itself. Whenever you get something that has religious content on it, find a reason to forward it UP the chain of command.

It is if it's based out of zealousy. This is a huge problem in America today politically. It really was then too. Jesus Christ points out zealousy specifically as a problem and was as much of a political activist as he was an overall humanitarian. It's all about being better than someone else and greeting and praying in the open even though the bible says don't do it and then voting yourself down the river so you can slap a sold out bumper sticker and be part of your zealous community life.

This may or may not be an issue for the owners of the company. If it makes you uncomfortable, tell her you prefer to live your religious beliefs than to advertise them, but not live by them. You are there to work, not to be recruited to her faith. If she start talking about faith, just change the subject back to work.

Either that or if you wish to crank her up, tell her you know about Jesus, he was a Jew, that usually gets them. That he hung around with a bunch of rough fishermen & whores & was a teacher in the Jewish temple.

Then walk away. When she pulls her jaw off the floor, only talk about work with her, let her fume in her "holy" office. One step too far would be to put up a picture of Stonehenge saying this is your holy place of worship.

Grow up & get over it! She has to show the world how wonderful she is rather than just being a good christian.

I wouldn't have a problem with that, and I'm borderline agnostic/atheist. She is entitled to express her religious faith as long as she is not trying to convert other people or discriminate against those who don't share her faith. It's up to her bosses to decide if she carries it too far in dealing with clients, but what you describe does not sound inappropriate to me.

I would look at it the same as someone who has pictures of their dog in their office. If you are a cat person, would that be inappropriate?

It's fine as long as she tolerates the opposite position.

How would she feel if you were to hang a picture of Charles Darwin?

Or you were to write a memo detailing how most of the symbols of the festive season were 'borrowed' from pagan societies?

It's 100% fine as long as she is not offending anyone. Also, if she just a catholic woman, stop being intimidated. Lol!

Yes it's called freedom of expression.
