Why are penalty minutes considered a plus in fantasy hockey?
I can't for the life of me figure out how someone who trips, elbows, hooks and fights helps their team... yes, physical play is important in hockey, but they count stats like hits now. So why do fantasy hockey leagues often have PIM as one of their counting stats? Why do fantasy experts talk about how a player "should be good for 80 PIM" like it's a good thing? Anyone got a good answer to this one?

They had to invent stats for hockey to play fantasy hockey. Too many players would be worthless otherwise.

Fighting is a huge momentum thing in hockey. It's not just entertainment and it should be left as part of the game. It is agreed upon and they both decide to fight. Dirty stuff is stupid but occasionally you need to take a penalty to save a goal scoring opportunity. Also, some of those big hits that get called for penalties can be as productive as winning fight and rattling a team.
