Can a member of the military buy their way out of the service?
I was told by a friend that this military guy she had been talking to asked her to open a checking account so he can deposit money in and buy his way of the service.
Is it true or not?

The "military guy" with whom your friend has been communicating is a young man in Central Africa or perhaps Eastern Europe setting her up to be the patsy in a scam. He us not American and he is not a "military guy."
Don't let your friend be an idiot. Tell her to Google "nigerian military romance scam" and follow a LOT of the thousands of links that result.

In America you can't, but in Russia (and similar countries) there are ways of using money to get out of the service.
Although, if you win the lottery or inherit a rather large sum of money, you can request an honorable discharge from the US military.
But that's not what's going on here, and what others have said is correct. Best to report him, I doubt that he's even in the military.

No. When you sign up, you sign up. It sounds like this guy is working on a scam of some kind. When you sign up with the military, you sign a contract; and the only way you can get out of it is to show some kind of physical or mental disability.
He should be able to open a checking account of his own anyways. This sounds like a scam of some kind, and under no circumstances should your friend cooperate.

Tell your friend to read the material at this link:

Pure and simple, she is being conned and scammed.
Military personnel have not been able to buy out their enlistments since before World War II.

To my knowledge, there is no legitimate way to do that, at least in US service.
