Cell phone provider is AT&T, my new phone is not picking up service, why?

I got a new phone which required a microchip sim card, so I went to my provider and they put one in and activated I....I now do not get service in areas that I did before...It either says "no network connection" or "out of service area" Is this a problem with the new phone or with my provider (at&t)

Update:

I still AT&T....I have not changed providers, I just got a new phone

    I had at&t for as long as the contract requiered because i almost never had service and when I did i was pushin 2 bars 3 if i was lucky i recommend verizion if you got the money (I love verizion other than their customer support) but if money is tight sprint never has no service but doesnt always have full bars

    Go back to AT&T.
