I have written and published a novel that I think would make a good film. What should be my first step?

I have written and published a book via Kindle, and it hasn't done too badly. The people who have read it like it, and it has been downloaded quite a few times, not to mention been ranked on a couple of lists. I think it would translate rather well into a film, maybe with some changes or additions, but I don't really know what to do since I am a writer and not a screenwriter. Any ideas? Thank you.

First get a literary angent or lawyer to represent you. Ask them for advice on how to proceed.

Second find a book on how to write screneplays and scripts. Use it to translate your novel into a workable project.

Third come up with a synopsis of your story and a cover letter to pitch the idea to film studios and production companies. The studio people will not read your script or your novel unless the synopsis is of interest to them. They simply haven't the time to read everything they get.

Find an agent to represent it for you to the film studios. Either that, or scrape some money together to film it yourself. If you decide to go the latter route, find some reference books on screen writing and follow their advice on making the adaptations.

If you are self published get yourself an agent, unless you by some stroke of luck have a degree in contract law.
