Is there a writer's forum for people older than 13?

Sorry, I'm just looking for something a little more mature. I just don't know if your story of demi-gods, angels, werewolves, or superheroes is any good or not. I guess I'm just too old. I thought I could write young adult fiction, but judging from all the questions I see here, I think I'm way off. Any forums in the 25-50 year olds?

Regards,

Mr. Old

Update:

Sorry, that should've read, "Any forums directed toward 25-50 year olds?"

I don't think "mature" is the word for which you are looking right now. Many of the aspects of YA fiction you mention are also in published novels written by people in a variety of age ranges. If you don't believe me, look up Rick Riordan (demi-gods), LA. Weatherly (angels), Maggie Stiefvater (werewolves, among other things), Cassandra Clare (pretty much any aspect of supernatural), Richelle Mead (vampires), etc. You'll find them well within your bracket of 25 - 50 years of age, even though they publish YA fiction with these beings you view as immature. You could also look into authors like Charlaine Harris (author of the books series upon which HBO's True Blood is based, full of every supernatural creature you've ever heard of, and 62 years old) and Laurell Hamilton, author of the Anita Blake series, also including werewolves, etc., which is for adults, as well.

Don't confuse fantasy with immature. It isn't. If you want to avoid angels, werewolves, etc., that's fine, read and write contemporary YA or adult fiction, but refrain from labeling ALL stories which contain those elements immature. Please.

Not all 'fantasy' novels are dull or trite; but it is true that elves, demi-gods, vampires, et al, are getting really passe to some readers. The next 'Twilight'-style redeux I say will probably make me vomit.

That said, not all fantasy is 'YA' either-- in fact most of it is not. Remember 'YA', according to publishers, is that for readers aged 9-14. Few adults would want to read much of that. Youthful fantasy stories, on the other hand, are often eminently readable for a wide age bracket-- as they should be.

Mr Old, I belong(ed) to a writers' circle that began to bore me because few of them wrote novels and when they did they were all of the type you describe. Most of these people were over 50; we rarely had anyone under 30. I had the same reaction you describe (but have stopped going for many other reasons). I would submit, with respect to all involved, that Yahoo! Answers is popular with younger people (under 22) because these are the people seeking answers to academic and creative questions. Those of your age and mine are more likely to have the answers. I am a former teacher and longtime author of youth-oriented adult-readability fiction, and I'm here to help young writers and scholars. What you (and I) need is some other forum in which upper-level questions are posed and answered by those with even more experience that you and I have; and I don't know if that's online-- and it sure wasn't in my writers' circle either.

Let me know when you find out! :)
