Should the NFL consider reseeding playoffs purely by record?

no because it would defeat the purpose of divisions other than a uniform way of making a schedule. plus, it defeats the possibility of loading up divisions. under the current format, only 3 teams from a single division can make the playoffs. if best records were made, then some divisions would be wiped out of the playoffs completely some years. a few years ago, the entire nfc west was garbage just like the nfc east is now.

How it is now is best. Every team does not play each other in the season which means some schedules are harder then others. The only constant is that divisions play each other and division winners should be rewarded. The NBA has a record based seeding but it works because each team in a conference plays the same schedule. But it also eliminates divisions. Who cares if a NBA team leads the division. It's all about conference In the NBA. Not saying it's bad but there are not enough games in an NFL season to eliminate divisions.

Best two teams in each conference (so best four overall) BY RECORD get a bye week. The other two divisional winners in each conference play wild card week against the two teams with the best records overall that weren't division winners (ie, the wildcards)

I don't see exactly what changes you're proposing here (maybe you're just being unclear?), since the current structure already rewards the most successful teams by awarding them a free pass into the divisional playoff round and rewards the best ranking non-conference winners by allowing them INTO the playoffs with the introduction of the wild card.

Do you mean perhaps that in the WC weekend, the best record should have home field advantage instead of it automatically going to the division winner in that round? That's the only other seeding chance I could see you meaning

No, because the divisions are regionally divided (for the most part) and the NFL wants the entire nation to watch the postseason. Take the NFC North for example. Bears, Lions, and Vikings fans will probably watch in hopes of seeing their division rival lose.

I agree with the home field advantage to the better record.

I would have it done by record and Division Winner would be the first tiebreaker.
