It depends on the amount of quadrants lit. I believe it is mostly caused by a type of lead free solder inside the machine melting due to high temperatures but don't quote me on that.

The RROD (red ring of death) usually means your xbox is over heating. It could be a permanent RROD or just a RROD because its simply overheating. If its happening to you, don't freak out just turn off your xbox and unplug it for a couple of hours. Make sure its in a room with air flow. That will prevent over heating.
