Toyota Camry VERY rough ride now?
I got in my 2002 Toyota Camry LE and noticed quickly that EVERY small dip and bump in the road felt like a sledgehammer hitting the underside of the driver's rear quarter of the car. Seems there's no "spring" in the back rear wheel. This is probably an easy diagnosis for someone who knows, but can you give me the rundown on what could be the problem so I can speak more intelligently to a mechanic? Drove fine the day before, though I think I hit a few potholes that day. Some ballpark of costs to fix would be great too. Thanks!

Remove the wheels and see if a spring is broken. For gosh sakes, the struts are 12 years old and we'll bet you have over 100,000 miles on them. LE's have very soft springs and sloppy struts. Swap for Toyota SE progressive wound springs and struts from your local Toyota parts counter.

Shocks and struts do get bad and become more stiff. They also will cause the car to bounce if they lose fluid. The way to check them is to kneel on the bumper on one side and try and bounce the vehicle with your body weight. See if they are stiff or if the bounce more then once.
Your car has a common problem with the lower control rods (2 on each side). They have bushings that go bad and allow the tires to move in and out at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions. If you jack the car up off the ground try shaking the tire in and out with your hands in those positions on the tire.

collapsed or broken strut. maybe tower mount issue. but sounds like it's bound in one position. unless a spring broke in such a way as to be stuck in something preventing travel, likely the strut is the issue.
"moroe" struts are oem-original equipment. they run around $80 and up. should take no more than 1.5 hours to do. if nothing else is in play.
but might consider doing both rears. ensure equal ride height and suspension cush.
another poster asked this Q. $300 for one is in the ball park. labor/parts. possible alignment needed when done.

EDIT,
might heed Country Boy's input. dude knows his suspensions.

Probably a broken spring or spring mount. Take it to a reputable shop for a diagnosis and an estimate.

A smooth ride is all about the shocks, coil overs and tires, get those checked. But mechanics hate it when you try to tell them how to do their job. Just tell them what you know and they will figure it out for you.

just curious, how warm is it? my car rides really rough the first 15 miles or so when its very cold out, about half the suspension checked and refurbed, new shocks, etc
