Why is it that a car's model year is, a lot of the time, one year ahead?

A car made in 2001 would have a 2002 model year.

If they waited until 2002 to start building 2002 cars, it would be 6 months before any would be ready for sale.

So they start building them in 2001.

The problem is, every car maker wants to be the first one selling a new model, so they keep moving the release date back more and more. So now, you could buy a 2014 model car 3 months ago in 2013.

Younger sounds newer and better. If I build 2 cars today, and try to sell one as a 2013 model and a similar one as a 2015 model, people will jump to buy the 2015 model because it sounds so much newer
