Do you feel somewhat obligated to thumbs-up theirs as well?
EDIT: Yes, leme:3. On the new format, on the Answers Home page, it lists everything you've done - questions you've asked, questions you've answered, answers you gave Thumbs-up too, and who's given you the thumbs-up.
It still doesn't say anything about thumbs-down.

I have always thumbed up answers i read and like anyways so makes no difference to me.
I think its nice to see who you can thank for your thumbs up though.
Ive noticed one or two contacts in particular that always seem to thumb me up and it means alot that they are so great.
