My dog is almost a year old and will not behave...?
He doesn't sit, or stay. He barks whenever he feels like, and it's very shrill. I don't have a car and can't get him to an affordable trainer. (And I really can't afford a trainer that makes house calls.) He was meant to be a service animal for my partner, and we love him to death, but we just can't get him to obey!
Any suggestions??

A service dog should be trained by a seasoned professional, not a petstore trainer. Petsmart and other store trainers have very little knowledge about dog training to begin with, let alone training for a service dog. Training standards are strict for service dogs, none of the behavior listed is acceptable. A service dog should not only be highly obedient and distraction free, but their behavior and training should be so impeccable that they are nearly invisible. This dog needs to be evaluated after such a long period of doing whatever it wants. It needs to be evaluated by a service dog professional trainer that is unbiased. The wash out rate for service dogs is rather high for owner trained service dogs. Be prepared for that, it is not your fault or the dogs fault though, many dogs just simply do not have what it takes. It also depends on the breed that was chosen, some breeds will do anything for you, others need to know why they should do what you ask and will challenge constantly. Training a service dog is nothing like training a pet. Experience is a must. Training a service dog is not the time to try training for the first time, or to pick a new and advanced breed like a husky, chow chow, dalmatian, rotti, pitbull, GSD or other similar breeds.

Nearly all dogs can be trained. Go to youtube and look up training video. They have some specifically for service dogs. Is there any way you can get to a Petsmart? They have some inexpensive basic obedience classes training classes. I'm not quite sure what type of service animal he was supposed to be for your partner, but he can't be a service animal if he doesn't even know basic obedience. Please research ADA law to make sure that your partner qualifies to have one to begin with.

If you can't afford a trainer or obedience classes, read books and watch youtubes on dog training. Good luck.

Start saving, and research a reputable obedience club near you :)
In the meantime, it's all up to you both :) I recommend Kikopup on youtube. Her videos are obviously free but I think she also has DVDs you could buy. But the youtube videos are amazing :)
