Do you think movies exaggerate slavery?

I remember watching "Amistad" and thinking "Omg, what a horrible existence to be a slave, and to be treated so inhumanely"

Then yesterday I watched "12 years a slave" and i wept more then when i saw Passion of the christ. Good lord, was the white man that evil? and so widespread? (95% of the whites are portrayed as reincarnations of the devil himself. And im not even religious so that should speak volumes)

    no. they don't

Slavery is such a touchy subject, any movie would be considered taboo or risky

there is no true slave movie. slavery was truly horrendous all over, and no movie can capture that. and no-one would believe it anyway

Yes, they know by making a movie about slavery they are going to get tons of attention and money. But pretty much all of them except Django unchained involve terrible acting and corny drama that they could only get away with by making a movie on such a touchy subject

Could you repost this question and add why you think that it wasn't so horrible. All you've said is that the films are exaggerated. You've never said what you thought slavery was like. I've heard people say that they think that it was like being maids and butlers. I think that's going a bit too far.

Maids and butlers don't have to worry about daily beatings, rape or having their babies hung or beat to death or fed to animals. Or having their babies cut out of their stomachs. They also don't have to worry about being sold or traded. Or being blinded or amputated or burned. You get my point.

I've seen pictures (drawings) of beatings and torture seen documentaries about Brazilian, Caribbean and other slave holding locals and read books. I would say that movies sugar coat what it was like.

Keep in mind that every race has been enslaved at one time or another in history. The blacks don't have a monopoly, they were just more recent...
