How do banks handle credit card fraud investigations?
Someone recently did some unauthorized charges on my card, 9 to be exact, totaling over $550.00 most online about 2 at a store. Must of been a girl since they shopped at stores like Hollister, Forever 21 and Rue 21,Charlotte Russe etc... anyways it doesn't matter but what do banks do? Does the criminal get caught? Police involved ?? is it possible to do my own investigation?? not that i would but just curious. I already spoke to my bank to refund those charges I just had questions Thanks!

You as customer paying have already been protected. The banks now become wronged parties, able to pursue the criminality if they so choose, you will never hear about any action they take unless it becomes extreme.

You will find that it will be dealt with and that you will find you get no information back at all. Which is frustrating as I once had a brand new card that was only used in the one place and cloned and used.
I probably did them more damage by word of mouth than any investigation can do.
I wonder whether they go after the small fry or whether the small fry are part of the bigger picture as most of it is gang and serious crime issues and they wait for a bigger picture.
It's frustrating and annoying and a hassle, but the banks pay up and you become more cautious and careful.
The banks are on the ball though and often a phone call checking you whereabouts puts an immediate stop to activities. A friend was contacted at 6am one morning to check if he was really in some foreign country as he had used his card four hours earlier in the local Spar store!

It all depends on the dollar amount of the fraud involved, the police department's available investigative resources, and the department's overall caseload. If the card was only used at WalMart and Old Navy, and the charges totaled maybe a couple hundred dollars, then I guarantee that there will be no effort to investigate. The loss is way too small. Fraud is difficult and time-consuming to investigate, and most departments already have their hands full with DV's and drugs. And, the USSS will not investigate anything that is less then a few hundred thousand dollars, and involves a conspiracy of several dozen people.

Typicall, the bank will simply reverse the charges, and the store will end up losing the money.

They don't tell you anything in the UK. I had my CC cloned. I received the money back and heard no more.
