is it better to let a plants vines trail down to gravity or lay on a surface?

i have a plant i think its some type of phillidondron. it has a long vine with many leaves. is it better to let the vine trail down in gravity or should the vine lay across a surface? ive read that one or the other can change the amount and size of the leaves but dont recall any details.

should i let the vine trail or lay it across a surface? what will the differences be as a result?

Philodendron like to grow upward as they do in nature. If grown in that manner, the leaves grow larger. Hanging is fine too - depends on what vine is lying across to determine if it will thrive.
