How long to wait for gym muscle soreness to pass?

If I wait 48 hours after going to the gym and my muscles are still sore, can I work those muscles again or should I wait until they're not so sore? Should I even avoid cardio that affects the legs if they're still sore? I'm just talking regular muscle soreness after weights, but no injury.

When I used to do weight training I went to the gym every second day, for example Monday would be Chest and arms, rest Tuesday, Wednesday Back and shoulders, rest Thursday, Friday Legs, rest Saturday, back to the gym on Sunday and so on, every day was abs, I only done a small amount of cardio as I was aiming for mass rather than looking athletic.

Make sure you get some carbs in within 45 minutes of finishing your workout or drink a carbohydrate drink during the work out, you have a 45 minute window before your system attacks your body for carbs.

It's normal for muscles to ache after exercise for about 3-6 weeks if you've just started working out, it takes that long for the muscles to strengthen and get used to it, so prepare for the pain for a while, it will get easier. Are you remembering to stretch/warm up and cool down before/after you exercise?

Depends how sore you feel if it causes you pain I'd say work on another body part or just wait one more day and start again.
