For 20yrs we always had BF Goodrich on all our cars, until there was a special going on for Michelin tires.
We put them on two of our vehicles, one has 101k miles on it and the other has 252k miles on it.
I can tell you that we LOVE the Michelin's and we get much better gas mileage out of them too.
I had Yokohma's years ago and I hated them.

What kind of vehicle is this? Kind of helps whether you are talking performance, or comfort, or traction, what?
In general, IMO it's best to stay away from all Chinese made tires (even goodrich makes some tires overseas apparently) and stay away from the very bottom of the barrel.
That's in general. For a cheap commuter car, go with slightly better than the cheapest ones. Cheap tires typically wear fast, are very noisy to drive, have poor traction, and are harder to balance. As with most everything, you aren't paying for a name with tires, you are paying for the quality you get in the tire.

Tire quality is based more by model of tire than by overall brand. Yes, there are premium brand tires such as Michelin, Bridgestone and Goodyear. However, even they make a few model offerings which are only average quality. So you must look at the specific model before before determining overall quality. Additionally, there are a few budget priced tiremakers who do have some good quality models, such as Cooper, General, Goodrich, Hankook, Kumho and Yokohama. Moreover, there are indeed brands which you should completely avoid including Falken, Nexen, Nitto, Geostar, GT, and Nankang.
