Why do speakers hiss when nothing is coming out of them? Where is the sound being generated from?

    What Rick said, plus any noise produced at the input end is amplified so it's louder in the speakers, that's why it's important to have good screening and connections at the input end, so quiet sounds can be heard over any noise. When the music is loud it drowns out the noise.
