Advice on MacBook Pro purchase?

I am getting a nice size school refund on Friday and will be purchasing a MacBook Pro. For all of you Mac genuises out there, I need some specific advice.

1. I have been looking at purchasing brand new and also second hand. If I buy new, the new one would be the stock, 13.3 inch 500GB hard drive for $1199 ($999 with my school discount). I have found a few really nice MacBook Pros on Craigslist and I've spoken extensively with the sellers and viewed and tested the MacBooks. A couple of them are as old as 2009 but have been upgraded with more RAM or a bigger hard drive and even new batteries. And the majority of them have bigger screens than the one I intend to purchase brand new. In this situation, would the lower price and updated hardware be worth the risk of not having a warranty from Apple?

2. If I decide to buy new, what is the advantage to purchasing directly from Apple vs. purchasing somewhere like Best Buy?

I myself work on MacBooks, so upgrading the RAM and hard drive wouldn't be that hard for me. I rarely have to have my machines worked on by technicians. I am just concerned about not having a warranty if something were to come up that I could not fix. Also, if anyone knows of any places that warranty used computers, that would be great information as well.

I would get a new one. It is hard to say what the history is of a used machine. I upgraded the hard drive to SSD. It is super fast. I also upgraded the RAM to 16GB (I don't think Apple even offers 16GB but it is supported).

I typically buy my Macs at Best Buy because they have a rewards program. a $1000 purchase nets you around $20 in rewards. If you have a Discover card, you can use their ShopDiscover feature to get 5% cash back at Apple or Best Buy. You can order online and pick up in store at either place.

I would get the new one as Apple don't work on the hardware updates when providing updates to the computers so the one directly from Apple will get updated for longer. However on the comparison between shops and Apple the hardware is the same but usually cheaper in shops like best buy.

If you buy new you are assured updates for longer and usually better hardware in forms of CPU and GPU's

If I were you I'd buy a Macbook from best buy

Buy NEW always. Warranties are so important with laptops, especially Apple laptops. When components fail (and they will) it costs so much to get a replacement part. Apple price the repairs for out of warranty laptops so high that it is usually worth just buying a new one, unless of course you know how to repair it yourself.

BTW there is no difference in getting from best buy. Get it from them if it is cheaper.
