Claiming a child on taxes?
My fiancé has a child with his ex that he just found out about last year. He's been paying child support and they're working on a custody agreement. The child's mother is being claimed as a dependent by her own mother because she has no job and lives with them. My question is this: Does child support count as supporting the child for tax purposes? I ask because we all believed he could claim the child on his taxes, but the child's grandmother already claimed her. Does he or she have more of a right to claim her? Before any asks, yes, he's been involved in her life and is not a deadbeat dad.
8 AnswersUnited States5 years agoHow Do Student Loans Work if I m an Undergraduate in Fall and start graduate school in the Spring?
I attended Regent University as an undergraduate in Fall 2015. I recently applied to and was accepted at University of Maryland University College for graduate school. My grad school is saying I m ineligible to receive the complete $20,500 because I received loans at my undergraduate school. They reduced my award by $9,000. However, I only received 6,250 in loans for that semester. Do my undergraduate loans really affect my graduate loans in this way? I will still be attending graduate school for two semesters which should warrant me getting the entire reward, not just part of it. They re saying it s because the federal government limits how much I can get in a year, but that limitation changes once I become a graduate student, doesn t it?
1 AnswerHigher Education (University +)5 years agoWill it harm my hair to straighten it before bleaching?
My hair is extremely curly and frizzy. It will be really hard to apply bleach with a tint brush unless it s straight. Would it hurt my hair to use a flat iron on it before I bleach it?
1 AnswerHair6 years agoProblems bleaching my hair?
Okay, so I'm bleaching my hair. I just want to get the black (dyed) out enough to go back to red. I got a brush, a bowl, 20 developer and 3 packets of powder from Sally's. However, I've mixed it and put it in my hair, but it seems like it's only turned back into powder once I finished putting it on my hair. The mixture stayed creamy but once I put it in my hair, powder everywhere. Is this supposed to happen? Any suggestions?
1 AnswerHair6 years agoRestore Dell XPS 10 to factory settings without recovery partition?
I have a Dell XPS 10 that I am selling. In order to create more space, I deleted the recovery partition. Is there a way to reset it to factory settings without the partition? I have the recovery partition on my 8GB USB drive, but I don't want to give this person my USB. What can I do? It is running Windows RT 8.1.
1 AnswerLaptops & Notebooks7 years agoAdvice on coloring my hair?
My hair is currently between medium brown to auburn. I want to get it blonde underneath and a chestnut color on top. Here's my question: to cut down on costs, I was thinking of doing the top color myself, and then letting a salon do the blonde underneath. Would this be a good idea? Most salons charge $60-$100 just for color, but for two colors, especially going from my dark color to blonde underneath would be expensive. Any thoughts? And I don't need comments from people saying "oh, you shouldn't do those colors, do these or blah blah blah...I'm only interested in opinions from stylists or someone who has had experience with the same situation before. Thank you.
3 AnswersHair7 years agoAdvice on MacBook Pro purchase?
I am getting a nice size school refund on Friday and will be purchasing a MacBook Pro. For all of you Mac genuises out there, I need some specific advice.
1. I have been looking at purchasing brand new and also second hand. If I buy new, the new one would be the stock, 13.3 inch 500GB hard drive for $1199 ($999 with my school discount). I have found a few really nice MacBook Pros on Craigslist and I've spoken extensively with the sellers and viewed and tested the MacBooks. A couple of them are as old as 2009 but have been upgraded with more RAM or a bigger hard drive and even new batteries. And the majority of them have bigger screens than the one I intend to purchase brand new. In this situation, would the lower price and updated hardware be worth the risk of not having a warranty from Apple?
2. If I decide to buy new, what is the advantage to purchasing directly from Apple vs. purchasing somewhere like Best Buy?
I myself work on MacBooks, so upgrading the RAM and hard drive wouldn't be that hard for me. I rarely have to have my machines worked on by technicians. I am just concerned about not having a warranty if something were to come up that I could not fix. Also, if anyone knows of any places that warranty used computers, that would be great information as well.
3 AnswersLaptops & Notebooks7 years agoWho owns a device after a number port?
So my question is this: if someone ports their phone number into the account of a friend or relative, and because it is a new line they get a new phone which is discounted because of the ported number, who owns the device? In my opinion the person who ported their number in would own the device. Am I wrong?
2 AnswersCell Phones & Plans7 years ago01 Ford Focus died, won't turn over?
So I was driving the car and stopped at a red light. It died. I started it up again just fine. Then I drove for a bit and it died again. This time it won't turn over, at all. All the lights and radio work. When I turn the key it makes a long beep sound. I tried jumping it it still wouldn't do anything. The alternator has had to be replaced twice before this. I have no idea what's wrong with it. Any ideas?
4 AnswersFord7 years agoVirginia required eviction notice time?
My husband and I are renting a room from a couple. We have been told twice now that we have to be out, first by Jan 3rd and now by Jan 7th. We have a verbal monthly rental agreement and we pay bi-weekly according to my paychecks. We are being told to move due to circumstances that have nothing to do with rent as we're paying rent on time. We don't have a problem with moving, but how long do they legally have to give us to move? For what I understand it is supposed to one full rental period. But in this case...is it monthly or bi-weekly because we pay bi-weekly?
1 AnswerRenting & Real Estate7 years agoProblem with one of my instructors?
I am currently a Junior majoring in Information Technology with a minor in Criminal Justice. I'm taking my first CJ class online because that is the only way it is offered. I need some advice about my instructor for this class.
While I've been doing well in discussions and papers, I seem to be failing at quizzes. And I've found out why. The information needed to pass the quizzes is not found in any of the information he has provided us! For example, 1 quiz had questions about material from week 7 when we were only at week 4. The next quiz had questions about material from week 8 when we're only in week 6. In addition, very few, if any, of the questions from either quiz were in our textbook. Instead, they were in another book, one that was not assigned nor spoken about by the instructor.
I do not believe this is right. An instructor cannot expect us to answer questions when the information for those answers is in a different book or a different book than is needed for the class. Any advise on what I should do? I don't want to fail the class because of two quizzes (which is all that is assigned for the class).
1 AnswerHigher Education (University +)7 years agoHow can I allocate my extra partition into one drive?
I have a new ASUS Touchscreen with Windows 8.1 It has two hard drives, or rather two partitions on the hard drive. C: has 185GB and D: has 258GB. I want to either join them so I have more space (as obviously that is not enough space on my C drive), or re-partition so I can give more of the D: drive space to C. Is this even possible and if so how would I go about doing it?
4 AnswersLaptops & Notebooks8 years agoIdeas for a recommitment ceremony?
My husband and I want to plan a recommitment ceremony for just the two of us. We've recently had some issues and we want to recommit to each other. The problem is, we're not sure where to start! We live in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia and would love to do it on the beach. It's not going to be anything big, just me, my husband and maybe a friend or two. I've looked at the local chapels and its all so expensive and that's not what we want. We want something small and quiet. We won't need food or anything like that. Any suggestions for my area? Thanks!
4 AnswersWeddings8 years agoHow do I know he likes me?
I've never been good with guys and knowing whether someone likes me or not. So how do I know? There is a guy I work with that I like. We're friends. We work the same shift and we walk in and out together everyday. We talk and text. He says he thinks I'm funny (except that I like Fords). He say if I wasn't around he'd miss me and that I make work bearable. However he has a girlfriend. Any advice? I will never break up anyone, but it would be nice to know whether he likes me or not.
3 AnswersSingles & Dating8 years agoHelp with DMV situation?
Back in May 2012 I had a car that had current plates but was in need of repair. I cancelled the insurance because the car was sitting and I didn't believe it was necessary to have it. Months later I get a request from Virginia DMV about providing proof of insurance. Of course I was unable to do so and they told me they were going to suspend my license unless I paid the $500 uninsured motorist fee, turned in the plates or I requested a hearing. So I requested a hearing and they send me a letter stating it could be 6 months before I received my hearing and that they would not suspend my license until after they made a decision. This was in June/July 2012. I turned in the plates to that car in August 2012 when I got a new car. I have never received any notification of hearing or anything. My address did not change until March 2013 when I moved to where I live now. I sold that car I had just before I moved and I updated my information with DMV when I moved as well and I've never received anything about it. I have since then gotten a new car and went online today to check to see if the dealer registered the car in my name and ordered my plates yet. This is when I found out my license was suspended due to this insurance stuff with the old car! They now want me to pay the $500 fine plus $145 reinstatement fee. I originally asked for the hearing for the this because I have the paperwork for when the car was repaired and such and I didn't know and didn't feel like a broken down car needed insurance. I moved 8 months after I received the letter about being granted a hearing and never received any notice of a hearing time or date. Is there anything I can do in this situation? I don't have $645 to pay to reinstate my license and I don't believe what they've done is fair. Any suggestions? And no, I don't need people to tell me I shouldn't have cancelled the insurance or to point out my mistakes. I'm adult, I realize that now, obviously. I'm just asking for any advice from anyone who might have dealt with this situation or something similar or maybe even someone who works for VA DMV.

I have a Microsoft Wireless Keyboard 6000 v3.0. I cannot get it to work! I'm using Windows 8 64-bit. When I first plugged the dongle in it started to work. Then it just stopped. I don't know what I can do to make it work. I've tried using the CD, but it says it in incompatible. Then I went to the Microsoft website and downloaded the drivers and software for it for Windows 8 64-bit. It just doesn't work. Any help or suggestions would be great! The batteries in it are brand new so I know that isn't the problem.

4 AnswersBuying & Selling8 years agoDoes an unlocked Sprint phone have to be flashed to work with nTelos?
My husband has a Frawg account with nTelos. He has an iPhone 4 from Sprint that we had flashed over to nTelos. We recently had to do a restore and lost the flash. I can get it reflashed for $25, but I checked with Sprint and the ESN is clear and the phone can be unlocked. My question is if I have Sprint unlock the phone, does the phone still have to be flashed to work with nTelos, or will the unlock do the trick? I've already called nTelos and they are clueless. Any suggestions would be great, thanks!
2 AnswersCell Phones & Plans8 years agoIs drug usage a legit reason for breaking a lease?
My husband and I moved into a place on 3/1. This was a roommate situation where our roommate was our landlord. He wrote out an agreement for us to pay $600 a month with a $300 deposit, which we paid. We had been planning on staying until August 1st. We soon found out he used a lot of pot. And he wasn't discreet about it. He would leave it sitting out in plain sight for everyone to see. I attend a Christian college and had I been caught there I could have gotten kicked out. So we informed him on 3/29 that we were moving on 4/1. No, that's not 30 days notice, but the drug usage was ridiculous. There were no damages to the room and when my husband asked him about our deposit, he said he would give it back. We moved and now he's refusing to give us our rent, trying to say that we asked him for the drugs and everything else. I just wanted to know if we had a legitimate excuse for leaving early with the drug usage. We live in Virginia if that makes a difference. We just want to know what options we have for court purposes.
4 AnswersRenting & Real Estate8 years agoQuestion about renting in Virginia?
My husband and I just moved into a place on Wednesday. Because of our situation, they agreed to let us move in and pay next week when my husband gets paid. I attended orientation for a new job yesterday, where they informed us we wouldn't get our first check until May 3rd. The guy agreed we could pay him $250 every two weeks for rent. He asked about the deposit and told us it didn't have to be paid all at once. When I got out of orientation I text him and told him about not getting my first check until May and that I would give him the deposit then. I also stated that if it wasn't enough to cover it all I would pay him the other part on my next check. I thought this was fine as I did not receive a text back saying otherwise. Now, at 3am I get numerous texts from his girlfriend saying the living situation is not working, that we argue and slam doors (which is not true). She also said they couldn't wait until May for the deposit and that they talked to their landlord about us moving in and he doesn't like it and that we need to be out by Sunday at noon. I have a friend saying that regardless of the money situation they have to give us 30 days to move. What can I do?
