You can use a regular or crossover cable if your network cards are relatively new. Most modern cards are "auto-sensing" meaning they detect if it is a standard or crossover cable.
Once they are connected you need to implement a networking protocol. Normally, this is done using TCP/IP. The problem is that this normally requires the use of a DHCP server - something that assigns IP addresses - and in a direct cable connection you won't have that.
I believe that the networking wizard has an option for direct cable connection, but despite having been doing this as long as such things have been around, I have never had to use it so can't speak to how it works. What I have always used instead was NetBEUI back "in the day" and manually assigned IP addresses since then. Open the IPv4 properties for the network connection on both machines and choose the option to specify an IP address. Set one as something like 192.168.0.1 and the other as 192.168.0.2
For the number you use, the 3rd group of numbers can be any value from 0-255 but it must be the SAME on both machines. For the 4th group of numbers it can be the same 0-255 range but it must be DIFFERENT than the last value entered for the other machine.
You can enter the same number for the gateway (although it doesn't matter in this case) and for subnet mask enter 255.255.255.0
Now, machine 1 will see the second machine at the IP address you entered on machine 2 and vice versa.
This will all be much easier if you use a router as it will do all the networking configuration for you.

You must have a working Ethernet cable.
1. Connect the computers with the cable.
2. Using the computer that you want to transfer the files to, Click the start Btn and then go to Computer(My computer) Here you will see all the available disks on this computer
3. Right click in the space below these partitions if any! you will have the options and select ad ADD A NETWORK LOCATION
4. Go next and highlight choose a custom network location and next
5. Now locate the disk or folder by clicking browse. This folder or disk on the network most possibly find the name of the computer you want to transfer files from
after that then go OK AND THEN NEXT
6.Give your network drive a name and then finish accordingly
Note: It may take a minute or two to locate drives on the other computer so be patient as the network icon tries to search for it
7. After everything then this network folder will be visible in you "My Computer" ate on the laptop you set it up on and if you have administrator rights you will transfer them by coping them and pasting them wherever u want
Ask doubts, if any

There is a possibility to use a crossover internet cable. Basicly what that means is that one computer will act as the router and the other one will connect to the router. You can make the cable yourself, but if you dont have the tools you best buy the cable, its about 5 dollars

If you have a router, just set one of the machines up to share the folders you want to copy to the other. Then you can copy them across the network. If not you need to manually set them up with IP addresses and subnet masks, and use a cross-over cable between them, not a standard cable.
