What does a red area mean on Google Maps?

I was looking at Chernobyl and Leith, North Dakota (a Neo-Nazi community owned by Craig Cobb) on Google Maps and both areas are shaded red and have a black dotted outline. Obviously the areas are significant, but what does the red area actually mean? (attached screenshots)

Don't know about what the red area means but this article from the BBC yesterday gives some insight into the story. Sorry it doesn't answer your question though.

From what I researched in roughly two minutes, it is the boundaries of the location you are searching.
