Many believe hell to be hot or a fiery place so where did these expressions come from?

" cold as hell"

" rot in hell"

Some believe that hell is mankind's grave. Those two expressions make sense if that is the case.

What are your thoughts on this?

If you dig really deep into the past, you will find a number of peoples believed in a blazing eternal torture chamber. Here is one record going back almost 3500 years:

"The ancient Egyptians believed in a fiery hell. The Book Ȧm-Ṭuat, dated 1375 B.C.E., speaks of those who “shall be cast down headlong into the pits of fire; and . . . shall not escape therefrom, and . . . shall not be able to flee from the flames.” Greek philosopher Plutarch (c.46-120 C.E.) wrote of those in the world below: “[They] raised a cry of wailing as they underwent fearful torments and ignominious and excruciating chastisements.”

The human, in the scriptures is divided in 3 fields of soul. he is, like all a trinity, and this trinity of energy is Neutral, positive and negative, no electrical power can deliver energy by flow of electrons if the 2 main poles are not connected inside or by the neutral medium.

The human has a center of feeling from where he perceives all resonance fields that are not in the audible field and can not be heard by the ears. We call it the sixth sense. Those are expressed as feelings, fear, love, intuition, inner heat or cold, are such feelings. They are transmitted to the brain by 2 mediums, water that leads the waves, and the solar plexus, our sun Chakra, that transmits it to the brain. The solar plexus regulates our digestion and heartbeat, that is why those organs react on feelings and transform our body instantly. Inside of us, this translates by cold feeling, fear, or warm feelings, love, and when the desire takes you, you become fire and flame, and the only things to stop that burning feeling is to satisfy your desires. That is why desire is the first of all capital sins, since the 6 ones that follow occur when the desire is not satisfied. This desire, in the scriptures is mainly oriented on sex. We have a brain, it is up there in heaven, and we have sexual organs, and they are under this golden belt, the animal soul is our inferior level, the intellect our upper level, and thus we have heaven, and inferno, hell, our sexual and animal soul.

The human is an electricity powered machine, 0.73Volts, 73.8 HZ, 556 kilovolts surface tension. This energy is divided in 3 pillars, neutral, the Adam Quadmon, the positive, Jachin, and negative, Boaaz.

This power is expressed by the symbol Wav, and is WWW, in numeric value, 666. Now, this number can be human, when you think, when you use you intellectual heaven, or it can be a number of the beast, when you become an animal and you have sex or you destroy and kill for useless things, or to succeed.

Now, where is life livable, where is the nice places? Well, under the belt line, sexual organs, pockets full of money and drugs, what do you want more? hell is the place to be. But remember this, "keep hell under control at any time, do not let it control you and do not get addicted to it", because then you enter in the world we know and we live in actually, and this happens when you forget that you have a heaven. Hell is tricky, so stay within limits.

Hell can be hot, but also a cold feeling. You can burn there or freeze, and both lead to the destruction of your temple and you inner self.

Jesus own lips in: Matthew 13:37-50, Matthew 25:41 and 46, Mark 9:42-49 and Luke 16:19-31

Of course you're free to continue to think you know better...hope that works out well for you, but I have no reason to believe he lied about it. (At the end of the day though, hell is still thrown into the lake of fire, so what does it matter since fire is the destiny regardless? See Revelation 20:11-15, unless of course you think you know more about that too and are closed to learn what God's Word says about it.)

ADDED @Truth: reading comprehension is an issue for you? Please tell me where I said I denied anything or accepted anything you're trying to put in my words here? And where do you ever get the idea that Paul wrote Revelation?! Consider a name change unless you mean "truth" ironically!

I have no idea where those expressions come from but they certainly aren't accurate. Hell isn't cold but just the opposite and the Bible is clear on that. Jesus describes it as a place where the flame is never put out and the worm does not die (Mark 9:42-48). I've heard of people on their death beds screaming to be pulled out of the fire just before they actually died. I believe they saw hell just before their souls descended into it.

    Please watch - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgHz1QtxJ_c

You never know...what if you should die tonight? Where will your soul go? Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ with all of your heart and you'll never have to worry about hell. Reject Him and you'll experience hell for eternity.

"cold as hell" simpy refers to an extreme - of course it is not factually accurate but most get the gist

thats just man's way - more often than not, we just make no sense

3 of the 4 word in scripture translated as hell do refer to the grave

but the earth's outer crust maintains a temperature of about 50 degrees year round - some use this fact to obtain geothermal heating in their homes

rot in hell would make some sense though

in scripture there are frequent allusions to hell fire

Mat 18:9 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire.

  • Good afternoon to you. Expressions have many origins.

My own "thoughts" are this - people say it will be "cold" in hell as God isn't there - and they it will be "hot" in hell because it's a place of everlasting fire!

Hell isn't the grave or a neutral place unless of course Jesus was a liar! But since over 70 times in the gospel He says "I tell you the truth" and that He speaks only what the Father gives Him - and of course God Himself does not lie - then I choose to believe Jesus words are truth!

The Lord will judge with literal fire just as he did with literal water in Noah's day.

But there is a way to avoid hell - by accepting Jesus as your Lord and saviour. Romans8:8-10

We can't cherry pick what we believe it's either ALL truth in the bible or not! Jonah was swallowed by a large fish, Mary was a Virgin, Judas a betrayer, the devil a liar and hell a place of everlasting fire!

Source(s): 9 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out , and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire. Matt8:19

The descriptions of Heaven and Hell are allegorical. What Heaven and Hell are really like is far beyond our comprehension. Hence the need for allegory.

How can one describe, for example, the taste of chocolate to a person who never tasted chocolate? Allegory will have to be used. The person has to wait to actually taste chocolate in order to know what chocolate tastes like. Whatever allegory we use to describe the taste of chocolate can never approximate the real thing.

Source(s): (47:15 سورة محمد )‎ The allegory of Paradise that is promised for the righteous is this: it has rivers of unpolluted water, and rivers of fresh milk, and rivers of wine - delicious for the drinkers - and rivers of strained honey. They have all kinds of fruits therein, and forgiveness from their Lord. (Are they better) or those who abide forever in the hellfire, and drink hellish water that tears up their intestines?

There is no feeling of "cold" when you are dead.

These ideas of hell spread through famous Catholic literature when Rome was still there. "The Inferno" by Dante for example. Anyone who takes the writings in Revelation to be truth should know that hades will be thrown into Gehenna, and this is called "The second death". Also the fire is what is described as eternal, not the people thrown in it, as well as one choice being death, and the other being eternal life. No eternal torture option there...

    @Ummm

So you only take the gospels as truth? Paul was a liar as well as the author of Revelation?

If so you are a rare form of Christian, Acts translating Sheol to Hades when quoting psalms, as well as Paul calling the heaven after the death of Christ "The 3rd heaven" (Which arguably can just be translated as the place beyond the firmament covering the earth) leads people to believe that those in Sheol that were righteous were in the upper part of what the Greeks called Hades also as Jesus calls in his parable or story "Lazarus and the rich man" "Abraham's bosom" also the ability to look into the lower levels to see the rich man in the lower parts.

Your denying this is to say that you believe that all jewish people in the past spent thousands of years in hell/hades, as well as denying what most Christians claim to be the books that prophesy Jesus...

Matthew 5:3 And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

The parable of Laruras and the rich man Luke 16

19 There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:

20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,

21 And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.

    22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;

23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.

25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.

26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.

27 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house:

28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.

29 Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.

30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.

31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

Matthew 5:22: "....whoever shall say, "You fool," shall be guilty enough to go into the, 'Gehenna.'"

Matthew 5:29: "....it is better for you that one of the parts of your body perish, than for your whole body to be thrown into, 'Gehenna.'"

Matthew 5:30: "....better for you that one of the parts of your body perish, than for your whole body to go into, 'Gehenna.'"

Matthew 10:28: "....rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in, 'Gehenna.'"

Matthew 18:9: "It is better for you to enter life with one eye, than with two eyes to be thrown into the, 'Gehenna.'"

Matthew 23:15: "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you... make one proselyte...twice as much a child of 'Gehenna' as yourselves."

Matthew 23:33, to the Pharisees: "You serpents, you brood of vipers, how shall you to escape the sentence of, 'Gehenna'?"

Mark 9:43: "It is better for you to enter life crippled, than having your two hands, to go into, 'Gehenna,' into the unquenchable fire."

Mark 9:45: "It is better for you to enter life lame, than having your two feet, to be cast into, 'Gehenna.'"

Mark 9:47: "It is better for you to enter the Kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes, to be cast into, 'Gehenna.'"

Luke 12:5: "....fear the One who, after He has killed has authority to cast into, 'Gehenna;' yes, I tell you, fear Him."

James 3:6: "And the tongue is a fire,...and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by, 'Gehenna.'"
