Do I need to file a Federal tax Return if my only annual income is my Social Security Retirement Benefits?

A return is not required but I would file every year as the return can be used to qualify for other benefits. I get 50% reduction of my property taxes for income being below a certain point. I need the return to prove income.

If that is your only income, there is no need for you to file a federal return.

1 exception to "no". If you are married filing separately, 85% of your SS becomes taxable, so you might have to file.

    No.
