Why is self harm and cutting glamorized?

I self harmed for four years. I've been clean for a month. When I look through these questions people ask, it is usually something like "I want to cut but I don't want to feel pain" or "I'm not depressed or anything I just like how the scars look". I know that I do everything I can to hide my scars and to heal myself emotionally. I got professional help and took care of myself. Each scar on my body represents pain and struggle and sadness. I'd do anything to have them go away and for my skin to be like it never happened. I hate the pitiful looks I get or the disgust on people's faces when they catch a glimpse at my arm or my thigh. Why do people want to look this way? It's not anything to be attracted to or to want. To me, wanting to cut just because is the stupidest thing and it is honestly insulting to me. I struggled hard. I didn't ask the internet whether I should cut tonight or not. I fought hard to quit and get better. Why do these ignorant preteen/teenage girls and/or guys not understand? Cutting is a tragedy and it is serious.

I honestly wonder the same thing! So many girls at my school are ranting about their "struggle" with cutting and depression on things like tumblr and it just saddens me to think that self harm is now becoming some sort of trend. When people have emotional damage, they don't go complaining about it online or to everyone at school they, like yourself are ashamed and keep it private. The people who boast about it are just annoying wannabes who can't find anything else that will give them attention from others so they result to this which is sad in it of itself. When people become so, desperate for attention and to be what everyone's talking about, it's really just frustrating. These people, mostly girls where I live, do it because, they way I see it, is they want their life to be like a movie or book. With novels like the fault in our stars and stuff becoming so popular, they crave for that to be their life and in order to attain that level of satisfaction, they need trauma and upset in their life and use things like self harm to make it happen and it just pisses me off. I'm really sorry you have to deal with all these aggravating snobs, and I hope you can look past it, work to be better and more emotionally sound then they are. It's awesome that you've accomplished going so long with out hurting yourself and I hope you continue to be successful. WORK TOWARDS YOUR GOALS!!! And don't let desperate nobody's get the best of you! Good luck:)

Most girls do it for attention, because they're probably not getting enough at home and at school they might not be getting much attention so they have to do something that will get peoples attention, but the attention is never in a good way. As a cutter myself, I try my hardest to cover my cuts and it disgusts me when I see girls posting stuff about their self-harm when they have no reason to be doing it.

  • Most people are ignorant these days... I almost killed myself this morning, but half of me wanted to die, and the other half told me to stay here... I can totally understand how these people are offensive to you, it would kind of be offensive to me too if I went through with it. I think about 0.1% just want some reassurance and the other 99.9% just wants to "look hot". The way I look at it is that it's just a phase we're all going through, and they'll stop eventually.

    Source(s): I needed some reassurance this morning. : |
