Why do we have a Martin Luther King day?

I agree that he was a great leader, a voice of peace in a violent era, dedicated to equality in all people, etc. But, Should he be the only person in US history to have a holiday named for him? That would imply that he was the most important man in our history. I don't think that he was. Certainly I would put Washington above him. The framers of the Constitution. Certain military leaders perhaps. Maybe another President or two.

Update:

I would like it better if we recognized all who put forth an effort to steer our country towards equality in all ways, not necessarily just racially. Call it Civi Rights Day and honor all the other people , white and black and everyone else, who worked toward the cause of equality in racve, gender, sexual persuasion and all other issues.

Update 2:

"My point is President's day, not named for a singular one. And Columbus? His work predates our country by almost three centuries.

Update 3:

If you think that Dr.King was only important for blacks, you have not been paying attention.

I do have to agree that he's only profound due to his imagination rather than actually having done something significant. I don't think any other person in history that I can think of that is great only in principle without having done anything else.

With that said, I think it's more along the line of civil rights era and not offending people. I believe it was made purely to calm people down and tame society enough to where they do not revolt. Rosa Park made history by not giving up her seat yet there isn't a day for her even though she done something physical and quantifiable for the civil rights era.

I still admire Dr. King. I read he had some white ancestry in his family so therefore, he was part-Black and part-White. However, people think he was greater than he was in reality. When I found out that he cheated on his wife and was racist himself, I lost a great deal of respect for him. I can understand why there's minority groups but as soon as you talk about white pride groups, society says you're racist. It's all a bunch of bull sh^it. Blacks and mixed people have to stop trying to push people into racial categories because most people are now, in fact, mixed. If you're mixed, you can't choose one race. Sorry but that should be a law.

He's not the only person with a holiday named after him. We used to celebrate the birthdays of certain presidents, but those were combined into one Presidents' Day. We also have Columbus Day, which is named after Christopher Columbus.

As to why we have the holiday; it was petitioned for and brought into law. So, for the name to change, it would have to be petitioned for
