Parliament wanted monarchs to be Anglican/Protestant. They made a law -- The Act of Settlement--that only descendants of Protestant royals could reign,so that meant that the Stuarts were skipped over in favor of their cousins.

The Hanoverians came to power in difficult circumstances that looked set to undermine the stability of British society.
The first of their Kings, George I, was only 52nd in line to the throne, but the nearest Protestant according to the Act of Settlement. Two descendants of James II, the deposed Stuart king, threatened to take the throne, and were supported by a number of 'Jacobites' throughout the realm. ..

In 1689 Parliament declared that James had abdicated by deserting his kingdom. William (reigned 1689-1702) and Mary (reigned 1689-94) were offered the throne as joint monarchs.
They accepted a Declaration of Rights (later a Bill), drawn up by a Convention of Parliament, which limited the Sovereign's power, reaffirmed Parliament's claim to control taxation and legislation, and provided guarantees against the abuses of power which James II and the other Stuart Kings had committed.
The exclusion of James II and his heirs was extended to exclude all Catholics from the throne, since 'it hath been found by experience that it is inconsistent with the safety and welfare of this protestant kingdom to be governed by a papist prince'. The Sovereign was required in his coronation oath to swear to maintain the Protestant religion.
The Bill was designed to ensure Parliament could function free from royal interference. The Sovereign was forbidden from suspending or dispensing with laws passed by Parliament, or imposing taxes without Parliamentary consent. ...
Queen Victoria was the last Hanoverian. She married a Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, and her son Edward VII, was from that Royal House. But, in 1917, the House name Saxe-Coburg-Gotha was changed by Edward's son, George V. He adopted a family surname as well, both names being Windsor . He did so because he wanted the name to reflect that he, his grandmother and his father had been born British, and that the family's allegiance was to Britain. This was very important because the family's German cousin started World War I, and bombed London using 24 twin-engined GOTHA war planes. George V was very angry with his German relatives from then on; he even stripped all family living in England of all foreign, read German, titles and replaced them with British titles, either royal or peerage.

The last family (the Stuarts) died out since Queen Anne had no living children. The nearest relative who was not Roman Catholic was the Electress Sophia of Hanover. Her son inherited the throne as George I.
The line continues via Queen Victoria but the dynastic name changed to Saxe Coburg Gotha when she married Prince Albert. Her grandson changed the name to Windsor in the Great War.

In the 6th century their ancestor Cerdic waded ashore in Hampshire with a band of followers and carved out a little kingdom called Wessex. At the time he was just one of dozens of petty kings, most of whose bloodlines and kingdoms have vanished without trace, but during the next millennium and a half his descendants not only hung on to Wessex but gradually added the rest of England to their domain; then the rest of the British Isles; and finally the British Empire. It's all about stickability!
