Is there any alternatives to a suit for men's formal wear?
Women seem to have way more variety when it comes to formal wear. There are so many different kinds of dresses with different colors, lengths, necklines, etc. Not to mention all the different types of shoes and accessories they have to choose from. But men seem to always have to wear a dress shirt, a jacket, trousers, and dress shoes, with maybe a tie, cuffs, or a vest. I was just wondering if there is anything besides a suit a man could wear that is just as formal as a suit.

its very hard to find men's wear other than a suit without it looking too casual, there are many different kinds of suits and tuxs you can get like changing the colour of the bowtie to a different colour, maybe a blue colour coz i think that always looks good.

it's always a tough question - formal remains formal and while over the years there have been trends to make it more casual it really hasn't changed a great deal - business formal generally means a suit and tie, formal/black tie would require a tuxedo and business casual you can forgo the suit and tie and even wear a polo shirt, but imo still require dress pants and shoes. You could of course always wear a kilt and accessories as a formal look, but if you don't have Scottish or Irish roots people might think it strange.

Not too long ago, any man who could afford a suit was expected to wear one whenever he was out in public view (except when he was doing manual labor). A suit was a status symbol that said "Hey, look at me, I'm not doing manual labor." Of course, back then t-shirts were considered underwear and only farmers ever wore jeans. Now, guys wear suits to formal occasions out of respect for tradition. The modern-day suit was more or less invented by Beau Brummell during England's Regency period. Back then, it was considered a manly alternative to the bright pastels and long, curly wigs the other guys were wearing.

It is never mandatory to wear a suit, but it is considered polite--a way to show your respect to others, your host(s), or the venue you are attending. The way one dresses in public is a statement of sorts, so it is important to consider the desired impression on others. I'll give you an example. I was invited to a little "black tie" {read, tuxedo, or really good tailored suit} event, and decided not to blend in. It turned out to be a good choice on my part, because in a room full of achievement-oriented people, only two were not wearing tuxedos--myself, and the key-note speaker. The latter wore designer blue jeans and a velvet jacket [no tie!] I wore my kilt and Argyll jacket. The key note speaker approached me during the party afterward, told me he liked my attitude and would hire me on sight. Many women enjoyed my company that evening, and the one I went home with I now live with. The short answer is that one can wear a suit and be merely accepted, or wear a kilt and make an impression!
