Do you support Syrian refugees coming to the UK?
The conflict in Syria as I'm sure you are well aware has been unbelievably inhumane. I don't remember feeling so helpless watching the news before. I think it's disgraceful that the UK are not allowing any refugees in to the UK. I heard that one reason they aren't letting them in may be because they want to hit immigration targets (The independent). It sickens me to think that could be true. Wouldn't you support Syrian refugees coming to the UK? Just recently a young child died here in the UK (may he rest in peace, God Bless) we should be allowing other children like him in and saving their lives there's no other way to put it. Thank you in advance.
Despite what the government say I highly doubt they are unable to afford these refugees. I mean they can afford to give millionaires tax breaks while capping benefits for the poor talk about hypocrisy. Also up to 2013 the British government have spent £37 billion pounds on the war in Afghanistan which has clearly sorted out nothing as the last thing I heard was that the Brits and the Americans were pulling out in the next couple of years and that the Taliban were preparing for the next election. So again a complete waste of money that could have been used here. Also Britain has given money to Syria but what those refugees need is action not to simply have money thrown in there direction. Germanys offering to take in refugees Britain's recession is not half as bad as the recession in other countrys there is no excuse.

Britain has no excuse not to help these people just look at these statistics.

Agree with R99.........we already do more than most countries......
It's about time the Arab League stood up to be counted..........what about Saudi Arabia.....they're a very rich country.......and culturally much closer for the Syrians.......much more suitable

I feel sorry for the people of Syria i am all in favour of sending them aid we should take an allocation of refugees a few hundred of most extreme cases to be granted temporary asylum. But the problem is Germans are up in arms about i too. Under the geneva convention a refugee is supposed to claim asylum in the next peaceful country which i believe would be Jordan. But the millions you i expect want to take is out of the question. A military campaign also is out of the question Assad has some very powerful friends like Russia. The middle east now sorts out it's own problems

The UK has given £600,000,000 in financial aid to Syrian Refugees, which is more than all of the EU, In fact it is only second to the US contribution.
As for people coming here, I think that we may be able to take some, but only for extreme cases and this should not be seen as a long term deal.
The whole asylum system is on it's backside, the principle is that you get asylum in the nearest Safe Nation, and that other Nations contribute what they can to assist with the cost. I do not see how we keep being the nearest safe Nation, unless someone has moved the UK since I last looked at an atlas.

In the event of a cataclysm in the UK had one not occurred in Syria, would you expect Syria to accept thousands of British refugees?
No. We would be left to sort ourselves out.
We are fed up with being an easy destination. We are an island and we are full.
We are providing sufficient aid, our best political pressure and covert special forces aid.
More than enough for a former french mandate under the claw of a russian bear.
We tried to help iraq get rid of their dictator and we lost 400 soldiers afterwards.
We have tried to free Afghanistan from a group of militants and we lost 400 soldiers and counting.
We dont want to lose another 400 trying to help a population who may well call us occupiers four months down the line.

I'm sorry about the people suffering in Syria, and I'm all for sending aid (which we do) and doing what we can to help (which we also do). However, what always puzzles me is why the UK is expected to constantly offer asylum to the world. We are a tiny island, and we reached overpopulation some years ago. Our housing stock long since failed to cope. Our essential services are already stretched to breaking point. Why don't some of the larger and emptier parts of the world offer asylum if necessary. Australia is absolutely vast, and almost empty, yet nobody seems to argue and accuse them of anything when they turn back asylum seekers. Canada, similarly. What about some African countries offering help?
It just isn't fair to expect the UK always to be accepting more and more people.

Syria is the place for Syrians not the UK. Britain is pouring money and resources into the refugee camps where Syrians are sheltering from the war. That is enough.

Well it's doubtful we could handle all of them, so which ones would we allow in? I agree that we need to take action, but this government has sunk cash into pointless wars, and given aid money to countries spending on space programs as well as the HS2 project. They're too busy feathering their nests to be effective.

We have given enough aid to the world, And we have nothing to show for it apart from a growing population and no where to house them, It's extremely sad there's been a war in Syria but as other's as we have done more then our fair share now it's time for other countries to help...

We can't, it is that simple
We don't have the infrastructure in the UK
We have no surplus housing, little room in school, An NHS stretched to capacity and more
We already give Aid to many countries, which we can't afford
There are plenty countries in and around Syria who should be offering them shelter
and safety
It is time for the UK to shut it's borders, and take no more in

The UK allowed over 70,000 asylum refugees in 2012. So, the comment " a disgrace that UK is not allowing any refugees" is simply not true. At the beginning of 2012 the UK had 150,000 refugees!

At the end of June 2013 the UK had 748 Syrian applications for asylum.

So, I'm not, sure exactly what you are complaining about.

No as we don't know who are terrorists. We give far too much in foreign aid when the people in this country are having their disability benefits cut and pensioners are living on a pittance. Let them get on with it. Most of them are already in a safe country, Jordan.
