Why does my car keep revving up while driving?

I have an Oldsmobile Alero I believe 1999, with 90,000 miles.

While driving it's started to rev up and then it will get stuck on two or three so even when I'm completely pressed down on the break it's still revved up to 2 or 3 and if I then put it in park it will even rev up to 3-6 while in park.

It's getting scary now in traffic because if there's a traffic jam and we move forward if i take my foot off the break it wants to speed up really fast and even going up a hill without touching the gas pedal it will increase in speed.

I've had it checked on twice and they aren't finding anything. & I'm worried if it's killing my engine or something by it's constant rev and if it it'll die on the highway in a traffic jam

Has this ever happened to anyone? They thought it was a cruise control issues and they disconnected it but the problem only seems to get worse

    Car Over Revving

If it revs like that on start up then yes, you are gonna warp the valves as the engine isn't supposed to heat up that rapidly. Also, lots of gas going to waste. Revving a car doesn't *realistically, there are some occasions where this isn't true* necessarily hurt the engine but you are going to wear it faster. Cars that run at higher heat and revs more often will need oil changing an will gradually *and permanently* deplete some horsepower from the car over time. Most cars generally lose around 1-4 horsepower a year when driven daily.

Get the solenoid checked then fix that if it's the problem.

If the CEL (Check Engine Light) is not on, then I doubt, and the computer also doesn't indicate that there is anything wrong with the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve as some have referred to as idle speed solenoid.

I would have someone look at the inside of the throttle body where butterfly valve is located. If it is caked in carbon, that would cause the engine to idle erratically. If it does have carbon build up, it just needs to be cleaned and it should be fine.

This type of problem would not cause the CEL to turn on.

As one person said here change the idle speed valve. It is cheap $20-$30. If that is not the problem, it is probably your computer. I had the same problem on a 96 Buick and it ended up being the computer. I was surprised that the dealership just charged me a little over $300 to replace it. I change the idle speed valve twice before I changed the computer. That was a year ago and mine has been working fine ever since.

Change the idle speed solenoid inside the throttle body.
