Various airline policies and practices for pilots and other crewmembers -
1. Hotel paid by airline on flights -
Generally hotel near airport for minimum layovers (i.e. 12 hrs or less) -
Hotel "downtown" for longer layovers (24+ hrs) -
2. Hotel must have 24 hrs food service (to obtain airline crew contract) -
3. Hotel must be approved by crew representatives for acceptable standards -
Cleanliness - noise - security - laundry service - shuttle transport availability -
4. Cockpit crews receive single accommodations -
Cabin crews share rooms (increased safety for females) -
5. Check-in and check-out time can be anytime of day/night -
A room is paid by airline for any 24 hrs period occupancy -
6. Accommodations (paid by airline) NOT available at crew base -

As a rule, while on a trip, they stay in motels and hotels but some regional airlines have apartments rented instead of motel rooms. The airlines cover these expenses. However, when commuting to or from a crew base the pilots are responsible for renting their accommodations before or after a trip if they don't live nearby.
