Im having a hard time breaking down this sentence. I don't understand what is saying

Villa is a popular hero with poor Mexicans today because they believe that he wanted to make Mexico a better place than it was,and it would thus a better place than it is today if had succeeded.

villa was sold to the people as a Mexican robin hood ( rob from the rich ,to give to the poor)
but the poor did not believe this story
