Does the DMV already have applicants' name in their system even before they apply for a driving permit?
So I passed my written/theory test today, but they couldn't issue me a permit because they said their system had my maiden name on it but my other documents such as SSN and work permit have my married name. I'm a legal immigrant who came to the US to marry. My passport has my maiden name but my SSN and work permit have my married name. I'm wondering if the DMV already has immigrants/citizens' names in their database even before people apply.

As far as I know, they only have the name that appears on the current SSN number in their database when they verify it with the SSA. All other document(s) that you present as additional proof of identity must match and/or have a document that verifies your name change. The marriage certificate could be one example of a verifying document of your name change. Also, it could be that the Social Security Administration has not changed your maiden name to your married name in their system. Also, since you're still an immigrant and not a U.S. citizen, they may be demanding you to provide an immigration document like a visa or application receipt with your name changed to your married name, so that it matches your SSN.
Bottom line: in the U.S. the SSN is the "magic kazam" that opens everything between you and the government.

Get a state ID card in your married name. Then reapply for a drivers license.
