    1. The First Battle of Bull Run (1861) was the first major battle of the war.

    2. The Battle of Antietam was the bloodiest single day in American military history (still is).

3.The Battle of Gettysburg was called the "high watermark of the Confederacy", the point they came the closest to victory and it was called the turning point of the war because it was all down hill for the Confederates after their defeat.

    4. The Union victory at Vicksburg was called the "turning point of the war in the west", it gave the Union control of the Mississippi River and was said to have "cut the Confederacy in two."

    5. Capturing Atlanta was a major moral boost for the North, it showed that an end to the war was in sight and it helped get Lincoln reelected in 1864.

    6. Battle of Appomattox Court House (1865) was the final battle between Robert E. Lee and U.S. Grant. It was the site of Lee's surrender to Grant and it signaled the end of the war.

    1. First major battle of the war. CSA victory

    2. Bloodiest battle of the war. Stopped Lee's first invasion of the North.

    3. Largest battle ever fought in the Western Hemisphere. Stopped Lee's second invasion of the North. Heavy losses prevented the CSA from ever taking offensive action again.

    4. Last bastion of the CSA on the Mississippi. It's fall opened the river to Union traffic and split the Confederacy.

    5. Atlanta was the supply hub of the Army of Northern Virginia. It's fall cut the ANV off from it's western supply sources.

    6. Lee surrenders the Army of Northern Virginia (the CSA's largest formation) to Union forces
