This is an excellent question and the answer is that it varies but it is now thought that the aging process is due in great part to the loss of telomere material (length) over many cell division operations. When enough damage occurs at the telomere in vital locations then more errors occur. Perhaps maintaining perfect nutritional status in the individual (and don't forget emotional/hormonal status) would yield the greatest longevity of telomere function and we know that benefits longivity of individuals and provides a better life overall.
