SVT-40 Opinions/Experience?

So I've been looking at these for a lonnnng time. They are pretty beautiful looking rifles. On top of that and the fact that they are historical pieces, I think it would be really cool to have a semi-auto that shoots a heavy-hitting cheap-o round.

But of course there are some cons...like price...and how Canoodia has them for like $250 but in the US they're jacked up to $950+...stoopid import bans...

I've also heard they're a total ***** to clean.

I think they would be super cool to own, but I haven't met anyone who has had experience shooting, owning, or cleaning them. Any thoughts? Experience? Something someone you know who knows someone whose uncle owns one told you?

Otherwise I might settle for a Vepr in 7.62x54r and give it a Dragunov makeover...or hunt down a cheap PSL somewhere over the rainbow...

Update:

@August: Well, I already have a PTR-91, but I love old WWII guns...

@Welcome blahblah: Yeah, I think they're way over priced. And I see a few go around $700...but still... I saw one on Gunbroker for $450...so tempting...but then I think: "Well, that's really only cheap by comparison to the already overpriced..."

Update 2:

Thanks Russ. I've been eying that website as well.

I know it uses the AK system; it's just an AK sporter basically. But I also know about the PSL imports, so it would just be about appearance... ;)

For $950, I think I'd rather buy an AR in 7.62x51mm NATO. It just makes more sense... Even though the SVT-40 is a unique-looking gun.

Unlike a M1 Garand or M1 Carbine, it is going to be much more difficult to find parts for a SVT-40.

If you want a historical semi-auto that shots surplus ammo, then get a CMT special grade M1 Garand chambered in .308: http://thecmp.org/Sales/m1garand.htm

The Vepr uses an AK operating system, not a Dragunov system.

PSLs are no longer being imported, you will have a hard time finding a new one.

I've seen a few but would NEVER consider buying one at the prices you saw.
