  • SVT-40 Feeding Problems...?

    Hey y'all, it's been a while.

Well, I just recently picked up an SVT-40 on great bargain. I love it, it's in great condition, beautiful gun.

I took it to the range a few weeks ago and it had a lot of failures to feed though. What seemed to be the issue was that the next round to chamber would get it's tip kind of or on it's way to the chamber but get hung up. I would have to pull the bolt back and let go and it would be fine, but it did this several times.

I researched the issue and it seems fairly common, but the answers are mixed. A lot of people say ammo is their issue, so tomorrow I will be testing a few different types and not the WPA Steel Case I used last time. I have considered it to be a mag problem, but with originals being the better way to go, they also run around $200. Repros are $50 but are said to require fitting or not work well.

Does ANYONE have any of these experiences? Hoping it's just the ammo, but in case it's not, any helpful suggestions are welcome.

Also: The gas piston was turned all the way up, so it should have had enough power to strip the rounds out...

  • Ammo Prices Going...Down?

Maybe it's just me and my shopping sources, but I feel like prices have been getting lower. The two calibers I mainly watch are .308 and 7.62x25.

Over the last several months, I've seen .308 go from $15-$16 a box to $10-$12.

Likewise, the 7.62x25 rounds have dropped from the average 50 cents per round to about 40 cents.

I also noticed that the 7.62x25 used to be harder to find and now some the usual carriers are getting more frequent shipments and old providers that haven't had it in a while that I used to buy from are getting it back in stock.

    Anyone else noticing any declines?

It seems that way to me at least, so for the love of God, no one do anything moronic with their guns for the next century... (Yes, I already know that's too much to ask by reading the questions on here...)

  • Can 3 Grains Make a Difference?

This question would be for someone who really knows their stuff on bullet grain.

I was shooting my .308 with an optic that's not quite top-o-the-line but is pretty good and got good reviews. I typically holds zero pretty well, but a couple of times I've had to adjust a click or two left or right, up or down. Pretty minimal, but still noticeable to a knit picker like myself.

I was thinking it was just the sight jiggling loose since it's not "top shelf" brand, but then I realized "Wait. Some of my .308 is 147gr and some is 150gr."

So can a 3gr difference potentially cause a slight change in the point of impact? I shoot at an outdoor range, but it has pretty good wind barriers on both sides. But I suppose wind could still potentially be a factor.

    Any thoughts?

One day I may spring the $500+ for a EO Tech or Trijicon, but today is not that day...so if it is the sight, I can just live with the occasional click or two difference. For now.

  • Weed Out the Creepers?

This isn't really a hunting question, per say, or really a question at all.

But it does pertain to the actual comment section we love to adhere to.

It seems like there's an awful lot of stupid questions these days. And I don't just mean stupid, I mean full on weird, and somewhat concerning questions.

Suicidal, homicidal, and otherwise mentally unstable questions that may be taken as jokes, but may actually mean something more threatening; especially when being associated with the act of misusing a firearm. Not only for concern of human life at stake, but also more controversy to fuel the fire of the anti-gun robots.

Those of us who frequent Yahoo Answers should take care to report those who violate this section with their absurd, weird, and unrelated questions in an effort to keep the section on track with it's actual topic.

No more of these "survivalist" or seemingly homicidal or suicidal questions of which the purpose if for mere attention or the lack of mental ability.

Use them report buttons, and fire at will!

  • Ye Olden Swiss Rifles?

So we've all been seeing and talking about the Biathlon rifle and it's straight pull design.

Well, coincidentally, Classic Firearms just got in a bunch of old Swiss K models!

They're about $320 and are in Very Good condition (As the Swiss rifles usually are). I don't know if I'm going to get one; they look really nice, probably very reliable, but the ammo is about 80 cents a round. (Some surplus goes for 50/rd)

So maybe just as a collector piece if anything...but what I wanted to know regardless, for my own personal knowledge, is if any of you shooters out there have experience with these rifles? Particularly the K11, K1911, K31 or 96/11 models. Good hunting rifle? Competition? Just a plinker?

And I also wanted to know if anyone knows any neat history about these. Since the Swiss were neutral during WWII, I can't find any really cool war stories on these things...so maybe there are none? And maybe that's why they're usually in really good condition...hmm...

  • How to gut a deer quickly?

So I just killed my first deer with my 12 gauge bolt action .22 air rifle (Thank GOD for drum mags) and now I need help figuring out how to gut the thing. Do I cut off the tail or the antlers first?? It's a nice 3 point buck so I want to keep the antlers to mount on the front of my Vespa.

All I have is a plastic butter knife from lunch.

If you could also tell me every state's hunting and firearm laws, that would be great. Don't want to get into any trouble you know. And any details on how to transport it via Vespa are helpful as well.

It'll be getting dark in about 4-5 hours, so if you could respond ASAP that'd be great too.

Either that or before the battery on my iPhone Touch d

  • What Kind of .22 is Used in the Biathlon?

So, like most everyone else in the world right now, I've been watching the Winter Olympics. I was watching the Biathlon, one of my favorites, and I got to thinking: WHAT rifles do they use in that thing? Are these all custom made or what? But they all pretty much look the same. And what is up with the action? It's a straight-pull, but it looks like they literally just tap it and it reloads! Is it spring loaded or do they have like super strength thumbs or what??

  • SVT-40 Opinions/Experience?

So I've been looking at these for a lonnnng time. They are pretty beautiful looking rifles. On top of that and the fact that they are historical pieces, I think it would be really cool to have a semi-auto that shoots a heavy-hitting cheap-o round.

But of course there are some cons...like price...and how Canoodia has them for like $250 but in the US they're jacked up to $950+...stoopid import bans...

    I've also heard they're a total ***** to clean.

I think they would be super cool to own, but I haven't met anyone who has had experience shooting, owning, or cleaning them. Any thoughts? Experience? Something someone you know who knows someone whose uncle owns one told you?

Otherwise I might settle for a Vepr in 7.62x54r and give it a Dragunov makeover...or hunt down a cheap PSL somewhere over the rainbow...

  • "Not Labeled for Individual Sale"?

Sometimes I see the statement "Not Labeled for Individual Sale" or "Not for individual retail sale" and other similar messages on snack bars and small individually wrapped food items.

I got to thinking: What do they actually mean by that?

Is it actually illegal to sell them individually? Or are they simply saying that you need to label them appropriately if you intend to sell them individually?

...of course usually the items are so small any sale would be a rip off anyway...but I was just curious...

  • Best 9mm for Multipurpose Use?

Ugh. There's been an exceptional amount of horrible and dumb questions today. (Yesterday was bad too.)

So lets get back to firearms:

I'm thinking about getting something in 9mm. I'd want something good for the range but that could potentially be used for carry. Mostly range shooting though, so every day wearing comfort isn't much of an issue.

I really like the Walther P99 and am heavily leaning towards that one.

So the question set today is:

    1) What are your thoughts on the Walther P99?

    2) What's your recommendation for a good "mostly-range" 9mm that COULD be used for carry?

  • Will Gun Grease Smooth my Action?

Okay boys and girls, I have a serious ponder here with a bit of a story, so listen up:

I have a PPS-43 in 7.62x25. It is probably the coolest gun ever and a ridiculous good time at the range.

When I first took it out to shoot, it still had the original grease (Cosmoline) in the spring and on the bolt some. The action was super smooth and the recoil very light. The gun would just kind of pop backwards a bit when you fired.

After I cleaned the gun from that first day out, it hasn't been quite the same. Don't get me wrong, it's still super fun, but the recoil is more of your classic jolted muzzle rise now instead of that nice smooth blow-back feel. The first shot from a mag usually has the old feel but every shot after until you put a new mag in is more jerky.

So the quandary is: Was the first go-round just a break-in period (Put about 150 rds through) or did cleaning out the cosmoline change the action?

To test the theory, I actually got this gun grease: http://www.amazon.com/Red-Rock-Gear-Tetra-Grease/d...

But it didn't seem to make a difference, nor did more gun oil. Perhaps it's not thick enough? Or maybe it just shoots the way it was meant to now and the first outing was abnormal?

    What are thy professionals thoughts?

  • Opinions on MTeck Knives?

So this may be a no-brainer for some of you more experienced blade folks out there, but I was perusing through MTech's website, more specifically their USMC licensed stuff and they have a lot of cool looking models. They have an official license to label their blades with the Marine Corp logo, but I don't know if that's just a cheap endorsement for the Marines, or if they actually have quality stuff.

The blades read "USA Design" but a wee little "China" stamp off to the side.

A China stamp typically indicates China quality, right? Or is their an exception due to a "USA design?"

Also, Smith & Wesson knives? They're about twice the price, but are they good/better? USA Made or not? (I got mixed results when searching)

I realize the top-notch knives are $100+ and come from those big names like Benchmade, SOG, Buck, etc. but I just need a nice EDC for cutting boxes, twine, rope, etc.

  • Ye Olde Sniper Rifle Choice?

If you were to be a sniper during WWII and had access to any ONE of the following:

    - Springfield M1903A4

    - M1C Garand

    - Mosin Nagant M91/30 PU

    - SVT-40 PU

    - Lee Enfield 32 MKII

Which ONE would you choose for the entirety of the war and why?

And if you were getting one today, would your choice be the same? (Money not being an object)

  • Carry Caliber Quandary?

I know some of the best stopping calibers run in the .40 and .45 caliber range, but there seems to be a bit of a grey area when I talk to people about .38 and .380 calibers for carry guns. (Some people have even argued me that 9mm isn't good enough.)

So if we were to pretend that .40 and .45 calibers didn't exist, and all you had to choose from for a carry was:

    .38 Special

    .380 ACP

    9mm

Which would you choose and why?

(I get a feeling this may all lean to one caliber, so if you cover all the pros and cons of each, that would be super.)

  • Your Opinion on Laser Bore Sights?

So what's the dealio on these things anyway?

I've always "shot-n-sight" my guns, but I've been seeing these laser bore sights for a while and hearing mixed feelings on them. I have a few guns that don't really need to be PERFECTLY sighted, so I was considering getting one. But I have some questions...

    1) Do they work? If so, how well?

    2) How accurate do they get you?

    3) Is there a special trick or method to getting the best result with them?

    4) What is the best kind and brand?

I'm only thinking for guns I would want/need to be accurate out to 50-100 yards. This would be mostly for checking zero on sights when I can't get to the range...

  • Taurus Judge or S&W Governor?

    Time for another firearm throw-down!

So a few years back I was in a gun store and saw a Taurus Judge for the first time. I thought it was the coolest thing ever to be able to fire .410 shotgun rounds out of a pistol.

I'm not very seriously considering getting one, but I've always thought about it a little...as I do with most other firearms. But my conundrum is:

    1) Which one is better?

    2) Why?

    3) How do they handle? (If you've fired one, as I haven't...)

    4) Is this an ideal home-defense weapon? (And if so, what's the best caliber to keep loaded? Or some of each?)

They seem like fun guns, but I'm wondering if that's really the only application for them...fun-guns.

    I mean...seriously: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Taurus-Rossi_Cir...

  • Gun Cleaning Quandary...?

I am VERY OCD when it comes to cleaning my guns. I want them looking **** and span for the next outing and well oiled.

For best results and a better clean, I'd like to enlist the help of fellow gunman by getting your opinion on the following questions:

    1) Bore Snake or Cleaning Rod? (Or both? And why?)

    2) Nylon Brush or Bronze Brush? (Does one work better on older guns?)

I have some older WWII era guns as well, so if anyone has some neat or useful tips on preserving and maintaining those old relics, your tips are welcome!

  • FN SCAR-L or M4 Carbine?

Bonus gun query of the week:

Since Tokarev vs 1911 seems to be an obvious choice, I decided to conjure up a question I've been wondering the public opinion on for quite some time...

Which rifle do you think is better and why: The FN SCAR-L or the M4 Carbine?

    I want to know:

    1) Which of the two do you think is a better firearm?

    2) Why? (Be descriptive in your answers! Use comparisons like accuracy, mobility, etc.)

    3) (Optional) Why do you think the US Military should use one over the other?

  • TT-33 Tokarev vs Colt 1911?

It's time for this weeks comparison war! (yay!)

Since we had so much fun with the Mosin Nagant quandary, I thought I'd throw another one out there.

Which do you think is better and why: The TT-33 Tokarev vs Colt 1911?

Both were sidearms during WWII and both have very identical builds. However, both have very DIFFERENT calibers with different attributes.

    So the question(s) are:

    1) Which is better? (Style, comfort, design, accuracy, etc.)

    2) Why?

I'd love to see some caliber comparisons as well.

I own a Tokarev and it is VERY accurate, even out to 25 yards. I get way better groupings than my friend's 1911, but since the caliber is so light for the Tokarev, a slight breeze can set it off target. 1911 has a better stopping-power caliber, but the 7.62x25 has more penetration...

    Let the games begin!

  • Why Are Mosin Nagants So Great?

    ...or awful?

Oh, come on, like you didn't see this one coming when you saw who posted it!

This is going to be a really interesting "Answer War."

    I want to know:

    1) Do you like the Mosin Nagant?

    and

    2) Why?

I want to hear all of your pros and cons: Why it's a great gun, why it's terrible, and what evidence or facts do you have to back your statement. (You can be model-specific too; if one is better than the other in your opinion. M91/30, M44, PU, etc.)

I personally really like Mosins, but I am very interested in hearing your opinions on why you love and/or hate the WWII era rifle.
