I need a sensor that detects, not the motion itself but whenever something is occupying the space?

like an object sensor. so whenever something is in front of it, it will activate. this would be for activating an led, leds, or a small motor. It needs to be very very small. where can i find a sensor like this? what would it be called?

Use an IR sensor, with a reflector. Like many businesses use in their doors. With the IR transmitter on and facing the reflector, it sees the beam and holds a switch open or closed, depending on how you design the circuit. When something breaks the beam, it activates the switch to do whatever it is that you want to do.
