Can I get an icon/avatar for Y!/A and keep my profile invisible?
I want the icon to be visible, but keep my profile private.

You can't but there is no need to put identifying information in the profile. Most fields can be hidden and your name can be a nickname. Look and mine. It shows nothing. http://profile.yahoo.com/WRPREEXLP4XQ2HTXKH6YLQYKO...
