1997 Jeep grand cherokee rough idle?

Just recently my 97 grand Cherokee 4.0 has been idling rough when stopped at a light or stop sign and in park. It drives fine, no hesitation or sputtering. I have noticed that the gas mileage has decreased. I can also smell something that's almost like a sulfur or gun powder type of smell when driving or stopped .It doesn't stall or die when idling, it just idles rough. A check engine light has been on for a while now as well.

    it could be the cat converter or a 02 sensor ! if the 02 sensor stops working it can cause the plugs to foul out and make it harder on gas and cause a rough idle !

    Sounds to me like a tune up is needed, when was the last time you changed the plugs?
