I would like to go to a good restaurant in downtown Austin, TX that locals love to go to. Any suggestions?

Threadgill's.
Another one isn't downtown Austin, but in Round Rock. You should try Louisiana Longhorn Café in downtown Round Rock.

What makes a good restaurant to you? There are tons of options in Austin and all different types.
Kerby Lane is one of my favorites in town http://www.kerbeylanecafe.com/
I liked the south location before they moved. (It's a few miles from downtown down S Lamar)
It's casual and open 24 hrs and all kinds of people show up there.
In downtown for burgers I like:
Counter Cafe http://www.countercafe.com/
open breakfast & lunch, small and often crowded but excellent food.
Casino El Camino http://www.casinoelcamino.net/
Have a few drinks and check out the interesting people with their tattoos and piercings, it could take awhile. Worth the wait for one of the best burgers in town.
There's lots of BBQ but I haven't been to most of them:
Greene Mesquite, Stubb's, Franklin's, Lambert's, Iron Works....
Jimmy Kimmel just went on a tour.

For southwestern try Z'Tejas: http://ztejas.com/
I haven't done a lot of fine dining in Austin. I like III Forks & Truluck's in Houston. I would assume they are just as good in Austin. I hear Wink is good also.
Also, some places I have wanted to try that I hear are good:
Barley Swine, The Salty Sow, Odd Duck, Congress.
South Congress is worth checking out.
They have restaurants ranging from food trailers to fine dining like Perla's.
Also some interesting shopping if you are into that.
Some of my favorites are:
The Snack Bar http://www.snackbaraustin.com/
South Congress Cafe http://www.southcongresscafe.com/
I hear there is a lot happening in east Austin now just east of downtown. You should check that out too.
One place I recommend is http://www.eastsidecafeaustin.com/
And if you need some late nite food try
http://www.hoeksdeathmetalpizza.com/
Happy dining!
