And this fact is attributed (primarily) to economic turmoil... If abortion was not an effective contraceptive in and of itself why is it still being pushed as one?

I guess more women are exercising their constitutional right to not have an abortion. just as long as they still have the right to have an abortion should they choose.
see what happens when you give people the freedom of choice they will quite often choose the more responsible route. Better than the govt. forcing them to carry the pregnancy to term...

Abortion isn't contraceptive.
Contraceptive prevents pregnancy.
Abortion is birth control.
It prevents birth.
Abortion is what happens when contraception fails and a person doesn't realize they are pregnant until it's too late for the pill.
