Best sounding stereo speakers for turntable?

I'm on a $200-250 budget and am in need of new speakers to listen to my favorite vinyl LPs. Can anybody recommend me great speakers for the price? Preferably with great bass balance since I listen to a lot of rock music (60s-90s). Thanks in advance!

Important question that needs to be addressed.... you are asking about speakers, but how about amplification?

There are many good active monitors, which are powered and perform very well for near-field use. Kyle made a good recommendation for a pair of M-Audios. Unfortunately I have learned first hand that M-Audio is to be avoided (I used to work in a pro audio/speaker repair shop... horrible company support for parts).

You really should consider a receiver such as the Sherwood RX-4109 @ $100 which has a phono input, and then a pair of full range speakers. The used market is always best for speakers when you want something with good bass and higher power handling. For the price of new compact speakers and a subwoofer, you can buy good full range speakers of very good quality... and that leaves out Bose. The balance of $100 to $150 can buy a fantastic pair of used, restored (if need be) pair of full range speakers.

If you need active speakers, I'd get the Audioengine A2
