Still an open question at this point. The chemicals necessary for life are there, water has been found but most of it is frozen, in 1976 the Viking Lander Labeled Release Experiment gave indications that the principal investigator still contends were positive indications of biological activity, but most other scientists in this area do not agree with him.

It is also possible that life once existed when Mars was warmer and wetter with a denser atmosphere, but died out as it lost most of its atmosphere and became much colder.

Some people believe so and the Labeled Release Test of the Viking Landers proved it but others contest the test results. It's like how for so long, people contested the evidence of water on Mars despite evidence even to the Mariner probes. It wasn't till the Phoenix Lander that the earlier results were admitted to be evidence of water so we do have proof but some people deny it as is their right till further confirmation is obtained but if life is eventually confirmed undeniably, the Viking results will be deemed as proof.

We actually don't know the answer to this question although many hypothesize, but if there was anything on the baron planet now it would only be microbial life as far as we know. Many think Mars used to be flourishing with life, but we don't know. Recent discoveries by curiosity show that there is 2 percent water every few square feet of soil (don't know the exact amount so don't hold me to that). These give hope, but not evidence to jump to conclusions so let's see whenever we get there ;)

There was once water on Mars so there is a possibility that there was life on it but it somehow froze up so No water = No life

    No.

And if you are relying on the popular media for information you'll be lucky to ever hear of it anyway. If there was any and it was discovered, the "story" would last about a week before the media returned to it's obsession with crime and sleaze.

    Cheers!

Biological - no. If you class rovers as artificial life, then obviously yes

  • It amazes me how people can ask this question without thinking first. If life had been found you wouldn't hear the end of it.

So far as we've been able to detect - No. But, we're still looking.
